Out and About for the Belgrade Lakes Region of Maine June 20-26

“Greater Gardiner River Festival,” Downtown, Gardiner

June 20-23 and 26, Thursday-Sunday and Wed, 7:30pm/Thurs.-Sat, 2pm/Sun. and Wed, “Grease the Musical,” step back to Rydell High’s senior class of 1959: duck-tailed, hot-rodding “Burger Palace Boys” and their gum-snapping, hip-shaking “Pink Ladies” in bobby sox and pedal pushers, evoking the look and sound of the 1950s in this rollicking musical. Head “greaser” Danny Zuko and new (good) girl Sandy Dumbrowski try to relive the high romance of their “Summer Nights” as the rest of the gang sings and dances its way through the songs “Greased Lightnin’,” “We Go Together,” “Alone at the Drive-In Movie,” “Born to Hand Jive,”and many more, $30-$35, The Public Theatre, 31 Maple Street, Lewiston. FMI: 207-782-3200, www.thepublictheatre.org.
June 20-23 and 26, Thursday-Sunday and Wednesday, 8pm/Thurs.-Sat, 4pm/Sun, 2pm and 7pm/Wed, “Big Fish,” FISH tells the story of Edward Bloom, a traveling salesman who lives life to its fullest… and then some!. Edward Bloom has lived a full and fantastical life, populated by witches, giants, and mermaids, marked by true love that sops time in its tracks, and framed by heroics that push the limits of believability. His adult son, Will, is no longer amused by his father’s fantastical tales, insisting on a rational rather than a fantastical account of one’s life. When Edward’s health declines, and Will learns that he and his wife, Josephine, will have a son of their own, Will decides to find out his father’s “true” life story, once and for all. Big Fish is a heartfelt, powerful, and truly magical musical about fathers, sons, and the stories that we use to define ourselves. Big Fish is a magnificent “big fish” of a tale, itself – spectacular, fantastical, and overflowing with love, $24-$26, Lakewood Theater, 76 Theater Road, Madison. June 21-23, Friday-Sunday, 7:30pm/Fri. -Sat, 2pm/Sun, “Ripcord,” a sunny room on an upper floor is prime real estate in Bristol Place Senior Living Facility, so when cantankerous Abby is forced to share her room with new-arrival Marilyn, she has no choice but to get rid of the infuriatingly chipper woman by any means necessary. A seemingly harmless bet between the old women quickly escalates into a dangerous game of one-upmanship that reveals not just the tenacity of these worthy opponents, but also deeper truths that each would rather remain hidden. Funny, inappropriate, and heartfelt, $21-$24, Waterville Opera House, 1 Common Street, Waterville. FMI: 207-873-7000, www.operahouse.org.
