“Maine Choir Fest,” First Congregational Church, Camden

May 30, Thursday, 7pm, “Radium Girls,” presented by the Class of 2019. Inspired by a true story, Radium Girls traces the efforts of Grace Fryer, a dial painter, as she fights for her day in court, and for her life. Her chief adversary is her former employer, Arthur Roeder, an idealistic man who cannot bring himself to believe that the same element that shrinks tumors could have anything to do with the terrifying illnesses among his employees. As the case goes on, however, Grace finds herself battling not just with the U.S. Radium Corporation, but with her own family and friends, who fear that her campaign for justice will backfire. This is a tale of Grace’s empowerment, $5, Maine Coast Waldorf School, Community Hall, 57 Desert Road, Freeport. FMI: 207-865-3900, MaineCoastWaldorf.org.

June 2, Sunday, 4pm, “Maine Choir Fest,” The First Congregational Church of Camden, is delighted to present two Maine choral groups, Midcoast Community Chorale and the Maine Balkan Choir. Midcoast Community Chorale is an auditioned group of fifty singers who seek the opportunity to learn and perform challenging choral repertoire with a commitment to artistic mastery. Under the direction of Steve Weston, the group will be performing selections from their spring concert, “I See. I Saw.” Their music seeks to explore the many visual experiences in our human lives that are expressed in music, and to honor the very individual interpretation of what we see with our eyes and our minds when enhanced by the other senses. Maine Balkan Choir specializes in old world village singing and dancing, particularly the traditional open-throated singing style of the Balkan countries. The songs, with their unusually close harmonies, modal melodies and complex mixed meter rhythms are full of heart and directness and the messages that they express are universal. The choir was originally formed to perform a single benefit concert. Twenty years later they are still singing, drawn together by their mutual passion for the haunting sound of Balkan music, free, First Congregational Church of Camden, 55 Elm Street, Camden.
