Out and About for the Belgrade Lakes Region of Maine May 30-June5

“The Wicked Good Band,” Slates Restaurant, Hallowell

May 30, Thursday, 7:30-9pm, “Maine Event Comedy presents Tammy Pooler,” in the tradition of Lucille Ball, Phyllis Diller and Carol Burnett, Pooler possesses a spontaneous, devil-may-care silliness that knows no bounds and accents the absurdity of everyday life. Growing up in a Maine trailer park, working at McDonald’s in high school, a stint as a “hairipist,” cosmetologist, wife, mother, and finally as a marketing guru, has given her plenty of stories to share. Tammy will be joined by Andrew Della Volpe, Jeff Medoff and Brendan K. Williams, Cowbell Grill & Tap, 49 Lisbon Street, Lewiston. FMI: 207-333-5188, www.facebook.com/cowbellgrillandtap/.
May 30-June 1, Thursday-Saturday, 8pm, “Sandy Toes and Salty Kisses,” Audrina has inherited Lovers’ Landing Hotel, a popular wedding destination on the Gulf Coast. Mrs. Rutherford-Smythe, the bluest of New England blue bloods, arrives with daughter Traci to meet Madame Coco. But Madame Coco has eloped. The only person who can pretend to be the famed wedding planner is Uncle Bubba, a “Jack-of-all-trades” who has developed several side business activities, all illegal. A loony receptionist, mistaken identities, room mix-ups, and rum drinks create a roller coaster of events that put the upcoming wedding on shifting sands, $22-$24, Lakewood Theater, 76 Theater Road, Madison. June 1, Saturday, 10-11am, “Maine Entomological Society Field Day,” Join the Maine Entomological Society and the Kennebec Land Trust on June 1st at the Hutchinson Pond Conservation Area in Manchester to explore this property and help to expand KLT’s knowledge of the insect fauna of this property, which was acquired in 2011. Amateurs and more experienced entomologists are all welcome to join us! With 29 acres of wetlands and vernal pools, mixed woods, 2,765 feet of stream frontage and 1,600 feet of undeveloped shoreline on Hutchinson Pond, there’s a lot to explore! Bring your bug repellent, collecting gear, lunch, drinks, and anything else you may need for the day. The main trail from the parking lot to Hutchinson Pond is 1⁄2 mile long and is an easy walk. There are five vernal pools, three of which are considered of particular importance as they host breeding populations of wood frogs and spotted salamanders. We’ll gather at 10:00 a.m. at the parking lot on Benson Road. To get here, take the U.S. Route 202 exit from I-95 and go westwards, towards Manchester. You’ll pass all the various Augusta auto sales lots (Charlie’s, etc.) and rise up a hill, then drop down into Manchester. At the 2nd light, turn left onto the Pond Road. Go 3.5 miles on this, and then turn left onto Collins Road. Take the first right onto Benson Road, and go ~0.9 miles. The parking lot will be on the left, free, Hutchinson Pond Conservation Area, Benson Road, Manchester. FMI: 207-377-2848, www.tklt.org.

June 3, Monday, 8:15pm, “The Wicked Good Band,” The Wicked Good Band has been insulting Maine audiences since its pathetic beginnings as a bunch of misfits and weirdos at Deering High School. Somehow it has managed to perform in many Maine counties and exotic places like the Norm Festival. You don’t want to miss the fun, $15-$20, Slates Restaurant, 161-165 Water Street, Hallowell. FMI: 207-622-9575, www.slatesrestaurant.com.
