“Calendar Girls, the Musical,” City Theater, Biddeford

May 9, Thursday, 10:30am, “York History Examined through the Lives of York Families: 1860-1865,” York historian James Kences examines the history of the town through the stories of 25 York families. In this session he will examine York during the Civil War years. The town of York, as with hundreds of other towns in the North, was called upon repeatedly to provide soldiers for the war effort. This meant that men had to be found quickly to fill the quotas. Men who could afford it chose either payment for commutation or for hiring a substitute to go in their place. The personal decisions made by the members of the twenty-five families reveal much about their politics and devotion to the cause. An examination of York’s experience is extremely helpful in understanding the conflict, free, York Public Library, 15 Long Sands Road, York. FMI: 207-363-2818, www.york.lib.me.us.
