Eleanor is a strong, stubborn and well-respected single women of a certain age who enjoys the comfort of her routines. But when love (in the form of a charming drifter) comes knocking at her door, can the sparks of late-life romance be trusted, or is there no fool like an old one? May 10, Friday, 7:30pm, “Organ Concert,” to benefit the restoration of the basilica’s Casavant organ, Dutch organist Tjeerd van der Ploeg will the performer. An acclaimed recording artist, Tjeerd is a frequent recitalist and improviser throughout Europe and North America. His program on the Hellmuth Wolff organ that is housed in the Bates chapel will include works by Bach, Buxtehude, Schmidt, Grunenwald, Dupré, and original improvisations. May 11, Saturday, 7:30pm, “15th Remembering Tom Rowe Concert,” this year’s concert will feature Dave Rowe and Schooner Fare, with guests Carole Wise, The Half Moon Jug Band, and Bess Jacques and the Strays. Tom Rowe was a consummate musician-entertainer, member of Schooner Fare and Turkey Hollow, and served as choir director for the First Universalist Church of Auburn from 1992 until his untimely death in 2004. May 11, Saturday, 8pm, “An Evening with Bruce Cockburn,” few recording artists are as creative and prolific as Bruce Cockburn. Since his self-titled debut in 1970, the Canadian singer-songwriter has issued a steady stream of acclaimed albums every couple of years. Cockburn won the inaugural People’s Voice Award at the Folk Alliance International conference in February and will be inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame in September. He continues to find inspiration in the world around him and channels those ideas into songs. May 14, Tuesday, 6:30-7:30pm, “Swingtime Concert,” join Maine’s “little big band” for an evening of hits from the 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s. Whether you’re trying out your moves on the dance floor or tapping your toes from the seats, it’s sure to be a swinging time! The Swingtime Band is enjoying its nineteenth year performing easy listening swing music. They have appeared in many locations throughout central Maine, a few noteworthy ones being the Augusta Country Club, Spectrum Generations Senior Expo at the Civic Center, and concerts in Jewett Hall at the University of Maine for the Cecilia Club and for the National Cancer Survivors Day in 2004. Band members include bandleader Elaine Bender on the keyboard, Dave Gagne on the guitar, Bob Esterberg on the drums, Dave Thibodeau on the bass, Wayne Pare on the tenor sax, and Phil Tedrick on the violin.
