Apr. 18, Thursday, 8pm, “Suzzy Roche & Lucy Wainwright Roche,” in a mother/daughter duo, Suzzy Roche and Lucy Wainwright Roche have been celebrating their first album, Fairytale and Myth, and were recently featured on NPRs Mountain Stage. Suzzy Rocke of course is a founding member of female folkies, The Roches, a much beloved trio of three sisters. Lucy Wainwright Roche has had a critically acclaimed solo career with her quirky and insightful songwriting, carrying on a family legacy of talented musicians. This is a free concert, but we ask that if possible, you bring a donation in the form of cat or dog food, laundry detergent, bleach or hardwood pellets for the Harvest Hills Animal Shelter, Stone Mountain Arts Center, 695 Dug Way Road, Brownfield. Apr. 19-20, Friday-Saturday, 7:30pm/Fri. and Sat, 2pm/Sat, “The Foreigner,” presented by the University of Southern Maine, a depressed, painfully shy, socially petrified and introverted young man named Charlie arrives at a fishing lodge in rural Georgia seeking solitude, a quiet rest and peaceful weekend…but chaos ensues. Apr. 20, Saturday, 1pm, “Growing Fruit Trees in Maine,” UMaine Extension tree fruit specialist Renae Moran will discuss how to grow thriving fruit trees in Maine. Apr. 20, Saturday, 7:30pm, “Jazz Concert with Brad Terry and Peter Herman,” Brad Terry is a world-renowned clarinet player and virtuoso whistler who has played with Dizzy Gillespie, Doc Cheatham, Buck Clayton, Red Mitchell, Buddy Tate, Elliot Zigman, Eddie Thompson, John Basile, Steve Grover and Lenny Breau. Brad and Peter will perform a variety of standard jazz tunes, and with their combined talents will likely surprise the audience with many spontaneous and harmonious new jazz creations. Apr. 23, Tuesday, 7pm, “Reading and Reception with Poet Richard Blanco,” this spring, Richard Blanco comes in person to launch his new collection of poems. He will read from his new book, How to Love a Country, a collection from the renowned inaugural poet in which he explores immigration, gun violence, racism, LGBTQ issues, and more, in accessible and emotive verses. Blanco digs deep into the very marrow of our nation through poems that interrogate our past and present, grieve our injustices, and note our flaws, but also remember to celebrate our ideals and cling to our hopes. Apr. 24, Wednesday, 1pm, “Soap Making 101,” Come have some fun and learn to make your own soap! The folks from Lally Broch Farm will be at Groundcover in Bridgton, ME to help take you through all of the steps to make your own “Cold Processed” artisan Goat’s Milk soap or (if you prefer) Vegan soaps- perfect for gifts or for your own personal use! This class is suitable for people ages 7+. Parents/Guardians are encouraged to bring their child to create a batch of soap together. Soap making can be hazardous so please consider the child’s maturity when making your reservation. We want this to be a fun and positive experience for everyone. 🙂 Each student ticket ($50) can be used to reserve 1 adult OR 1 adult and 1 child working together to make 1 batch (8 bars) of soap. If you will each be creating your own batches of 8 soaps each, 2 tickets are required. What you NEED to Know: We will guide you in creating 8 bars of soap (a $56 value). The cost of the class is $50 per person and includes all the materials necessary to create your own soaps. Pre-registration is required. You may choose to bring your own soap molds or purchase a professional silicone mold from us (order in advance by April 12, 2019) to bring your soaps home with you that night. OR you may use our molds and we will return your soaps to Groundcover for you to pick up about a week after our class is held. Each student will receive a 3-page hand-out after class detailing our soap making method, three soap recipes (including the one we create together) and a list of resources for supplies. Seating is limited to eight students so that we can provide personal attention and answer questions. Don’t delay in reserving your spot. 🙂 We hope to see you there!
