Mar. 13, Sunday, 2pm, “Concert with Simons and Goodwin,” Simons and Goodwin will be performing their particular brand of acoustic music with intricate arrangements, tight expression, and beautiful harmonies. Simons and Goodwin got their beginning back in the 1960’s when they met while performing in the Boston and Cambridge coffeehouses. Bob Simons was a single act while Renee Boghosian (later Goodwin) was performing with the now well-known folk artist Bill Staines. Boston’s folk music scene in the 60’s was, along with New York’s Greenwich Village, teeming with folk performers who became major names in the industry. It was the place to be, and it was the place to acquire the musical and performance skills needed to become successful as folk performers. Bob and Renee did just that! Their individual talents came together in 2006 when their friendship turned into “Simons and Goodwin.” While primarily a folk duo, Simons & Goodwin can treat country, old rock, jazz and blues standards with similar musical skill. In addition, they do a number of original songs including the popular song “The Portland”, which is about the foundering of the steamer Portland in the great Portland Gale of 1898. According to one audience member, “There is a warmth that comes through their songs and it makes you feel like you’re listening to old friends,” free, McArthur Public Library, 270 Main St, Biddeford. Mar. 13, Sunday, 3pm, “Boghat-Concerts in West K,” a special program of Irish traditional music featuring Boghat, one of the Portland area’s longest-running Irish groups. Led by uilleann piper Tom Rota, Boghat has been bringing its unique brand of traditional Irish music with a contemporary twist to audiences throughout the region for over a decade. New Jersey native Rota is one of the anchors of the Irish music scene in Portland. In addition to his performances with Boghat he runs the popular weekly “Irish Night at Blue” series of concerts, and is a fixture at the Sunday afternoon informal sessions at Brian Boru pub. He has been playing the uilleann pipes (Irish bagpipes) for over 20 years, and holds a Master’s degree in Irish Traditional Music and Dance from the University of Limerick. Original band member Chris “Junior” Stevens has recently re-joined Boghat, adding his outstanding talents on button accordion and concertina to the melodies of the pipes. One of the region’s best, and most versatile, button accordion players, York native Stevens also plays Irish music with the Press Gang, and Cajun music with Sylvain’s Acadian Aces. Rounding out the trio is new member Matt Shipman, who holds things together on guitar and bouzouki and, for the first time in Boghat’s history, adds vocals to the instrumental stylings. The multi-talented Shipman is equally at home with bluegrass and Irish music. He is well-known for his work with partner Erica Brown, both as a member of Erica Brown & the Bluegrass Connection, and in their duo, Darlin’ Corey, $15, $10/youth, $35/families, West Kennebunk United Methodist Church, 160 Alfred Rd, West Kennebunk.
