Mar. 10, Thursday, 7pm, “Brazilian Theater and Dance Company,” The Alberto Maranhao Theater and Dance Company (CDTAM) of Natal, Brazil comes to the Denmark Arts Center in collaboration with Arts Moves in Norway. CDTAM is the state dance company of the Rio Grande do Norte and has performed all over the world, including appearances in France, Germany, Mexico, Switzerland, and United States for over 18 years. They are known for their exciting athletic dancers who draw from a range of movement traditions from narrative classical to Brazilian popular dance. Meanwhile, Alice and Hank mourn the loss of their son, Jack, whose heart was used to save Joy. At a friend’s urging, Joy tracks down Jack’s family to find closure. But are Alice, Hank, and their daughter Sammy ready to accept Jack’s death and welcome Joy into their lives? (And you’ll have more fun without them!) Inspired by the original 1936 film of the same name, this raucous musical comedy takes a tongue-in-cheek look at the hysteria caused when clean-cut kids fall victim to marijuana, leading them on a downward spiral filled with evil jazz music, sex and violence. The addictive and clever musical numbers range from big Broadway-style showstoppers to swing tunes like Down at the Ol’ Five and Dime and the Vegas-style Listen to Jesus, Jimmy, featuring J.C. Mar. 11-13, Friday-Saturday, 7:30pm/Fri, Sat, 2:30pm/Sun, “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” Thoroughly Modern Millie was produced on Broadway in 2002 and won six Tony Awards, including Best New Musical. The play tells the story of Millie Dillmount, who comes to New York in 1922, with the intention of marrying for money instead of love. Of course complications arise when she rents a room from the evil Mrs. Meers and meets the handsome, Jimmy. Millie might need to alter her plan. Millie has many big song and dance numbers and a great deal of wit and humor. The Roaring 20’s are in full swing and the lavish life style is in full display. There will be projections on the stage and some of the script is performed in Mandarin and Cantonese. The students are working with the Confucius Institute at USM to provide authentic pronunciations and translations. Millie is being directed by Joshua Hurd. Mar. 12, Saturday, 7:30pm, “Evening of Duets,” Two New York based dance companies, Brotherhood Dance (Orlando Hunter and Riccardo Valentine) and Tall Girls Dancing (Sara Gibbons & Doug LeCours), join Maine company Hio Ridge Dance (Cookie Harrist and Delaney McDonough) for an evenings of performance at the Denmark Arts Center. While Brotherhood Dance and Tall Girls Dancing operate out of New York, both groups are quite familiar with Maine. Brotherhood Dance has performed work at the Denmark Arts Center many times in the past including Afro-Solo-Man and Black Jones, works they developed while in residence there. Sara Gibbons of Tall Girls Dancing is a Colby College alumni where she graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2015. Gibbons and LeCours met in Maine at the Bates Dance Festival in 2013 and have been making work together ever since, $10, Denmark Arts Center, 50 West Main St, Denmark.
