Feb. 26, Friday, 7pm, “Geologic and Topographic Challenges Encountered on Benedict Arnold’s March to Quebec,” Benedict Arnold’s ill-fated march to Quebec passed through our backyards in the fall of 1775. The expedition’s purpose was to secretly travel up the Kennebec, Dead and Chaudiere rivers, capture the city of Quebec from the British and convince the populace of Quebec to throw in with the American cause. Even today, this region is recognized as a wild, untamed area, but in 1775, its natural vegetation and geology made travel all but impossible. Learn more about the geographical challenges Arnold and his men faced from Colby College professor Bruce Reuger, and about some of the changes to the Maine section of the expedition in the last 240 years, L.L. Feb. 27, Saturday, 10am-12pm, “Animal Tracking,” an animal tracking expedition at its Appleton Preserve in Appleton. Sandie Sabaka, a Maine Master Naturalist and Christine Parrish, a local nature writer from Lincolnville will lead the expedition. The Appleton Preserve is a spectacular 124 acre property set along the banks of the St. George River protecting a diversity of habitats as well as deer, moose and other wildlife. The river banks serve as a highway for wildlife through the winter months, crisscrossing the woodlands, wetlands and the river. Participants are invited to bring water and a snack, dress warmly, wear hiking boots and bring snowshoes depending upon weather conditions, free, meet at the industrial building parking lot on the Camden Rd (Route 131), just north of the St. George River Bridge, and prior to the intersection with Route 131, Georges River Land Trust, Rockland.
