Enjoy Sunsets Like This Near China Lake in Maine

Located between Augusta and the coast, with China Lake and other ponds dotting the landscape, plus the Kennebec and Sheepscot Rivers, the China Lakes Region is a delightful setting for short and easy hikes. Each hike listed below offers an opportunity for you and your family to have fun while making discoveries and memories. Go ahead–get out and hike.



Thurston Park
While there are a few multi-use trails, you’ll also find hiking only trails within the 5.2 mile network that loop through the 400-acre park. Walk along sandy ridges and through the mixed forest. The Monument Trail leads to the 1838 stone marker indicating the boundary corner for the towns of China, Albion and Palermo.

Degree of Difficulty: Easy
China School Forest
Located between China Primary School and China Middle School, the 50-acre property features a 1.4 mile network of trails developed as an outdoor classroom. The trails are open to the public, but if you visit during school hours, please sign in at one of the schools. The China School Forest highlights forestry techniques and natural features. Look for interpretive signs near the outdoor classroom areas.
Trail Access: Behind either of the schools. Remember to sign in if visiting during school hours.

Davidson Nature Preserve
This blueberry bog is owned by the Kennebec Land Trust. Because it is a bird nesting area, please leave your dogs at home. Enjoy the heron rookery by the beaver flowage and in season–pick some blueberries.

Degree of Difficulty: Easy
Vassalboro Wildlife Habitat
The loop trail through the habitat offers time for reflection of past land use–from the Abenaki Indians who hunted and fished here to 19th century farmers who cleared the land for crops and pastures to industrial development in the use of water for mill power and a trolley line to the return to wildlife habitat. A section of the trail passes beside Webber Pond.

Degree of Difficulty: Easy
Annie Sturgis Sanctuary Trail
This easy trail along the Kennebec River is noted for its large stand of extremely rare Wild Ginger and other lime-loving plants including bloodroot and trout lily. The property is owned and managed by the New England Wildflower Society.
Trail Access: Cushnoc Road, Vassalboro
Degree of Difficulty: Easy
Palermo Preserve
Interpretive signs, a vernal pool and the Sheepscot River are among the highlights of this one-mile network of trails. The river is recognized as an important spawning habitat for Atlantic Salmon.

Degree of Difficulty: Easy/Moderate
