The southern and eastern shores are swampy wetlands. Around the rest of the pond you’ll find a boulder strewn shoreline and several submerged rocky shoals, which make spectacular fisheries for smallmouth and largemouth bass. Brown trout are maintained through an annual stocking program. White perch and chain pickerel are also abundant for summer and winter fishing. Fishing tournaments take place throughout the season. A state-owned boat ramp is located at the northern end on Routes 3/202 in South Vassalboro.
The water quality is poor, but the Threemile Pond Association (TMPA), led by president Rick Hayden, is working with the Maine Department of Environmental Protection and the Maine Association of Conservation Districts to improve conditions. In 2003 they completed a Phosphorus Control Action Plan and applied for a 319 grant from the US Environmental Protection Agency. This allows them to place rip rap and other erosion control methods to keep phosphorus and other nutrients out of the water.
According a recent TMPA newsletter, the association is “investigating using alewives as a means to control algae and improve TMP water quality . . . data from Maine points to good water quality on lakes with healthy alewife populations . . . Right next door to us, Webber Pond has seen marked improvement with the use of alewives. According to Frank Richards, President of Webber Pond Association, ‘ . . . between the drawdown and restoration of sea run alewives, Webber Pond had no bloom in 2005, a very slight bloom in 2006, and no bloom in 2007. The alewives sequester phosphorus and other nutrients as they grow and then take it with them when they migrate.’”
Webber Pond, which covers 1,201 acres, has a maximum depth of 41 feet. Where it is shallow and weedy, you’ll find plenty of warmwater gamefish. Brown trout are stocked annually here as well. And Webber Pond is known to produce trophy largemouth bass. A town-maintained boat ramp is located at the outlet in Vassalboro.

The Vassalboro Wildlife Habitat, managed by the Kennebec Land Trust, covers 220 acres of mixed woodlands and wetlands with 2,200 feet of undeveloped shoreline on Webber Pond. At the habitat you might glimpse beaver, deer, small mammals, hawks and other birds. Off nearby Cushnoc Road, is the Annie Sturgis Santuary.
Along the nature walk there is a notable stand of Wild Ginger (Asarum canadense), which is extremely rare in Maine.
Both ponds offer beautiful sunrises and sunsets, plus opportunities for boating, hiking, golfing and snowmobiling. Either one would provide a perfect lakefront location for your vacation home.
