Alamoosook Lake in Orland, Maine, is one of Maine’s Best Kept Secrets

As one of Maine’s Best Kept Secrets, lakefront property owners appreciate that Alamoosook Lake in Orland is pure and unadulterated.

Located in the Bangor Lakes Region of Maine, Alamoosook Lake is granite lined and encompasses 997 acres. The water quality is average and there are no known invasive aquatics. Boulders dot the shoreline and create great habitat for smallmouth bass. The mean depth of Alamoosook Lake is 16 feet, with a maximum depth of 28 feet. This rather shallow lake provides excellent habitat for warmwater sportsfish species including bass and white perch.  A boat launch is located at the fish hatchery.
The Craig Brook National Fish Hatchery sits on the eastern shore. This is the first and oldest salmon hatchery on the East Coast–it was started in 1871. Hands-on exhibits and summer tours are enjoyed by visitors.
Each June, on the last Saturday of the month, the town of Orland celebrates Orland River Day. Activities include an Alewife Run paddle from the hatchery to Orland Village on the Narramissic River, a raft race, magic show, parade and strawberry festival. There’s even a cannonball contest and a beauty pageant.
Orland was incorporated in 1800 and sets along the banks of the Narramissic River. Historic homes, a general store, museum and antique shop, plus a white-steepled church all add up to a quintessential New England town. Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park are only 45 minutes away.
Back at your classic Maine cabin, camp or cottage on Almoosook Lake, you’ll find calm, peace and solitude. If you love nature, you’re sure to be enthralled with the loons, eagles, osprey, deer, beaver and occasional bear that you’ll see by the lake.
With crystal clear water in the foreground, white pines form the backdrop. Included in the backdrop for many lakefront property owners is Great Pond Mountain. The Great Pond Mountain Conservation Trust oversees the 4,500-acre Wildlands–“a place where you may see a moose while mountain biking, paddle along a pristine shore, or enjoy an amazing view from more than one mountain – all within minutes of Rte. 1.”
Your Almoosook Lake bucket list should include the following: swimming in the refreshingly crisp and clear water; remarking daily on the beauty of your lakefront setting; fishing for sportsfish; sitting around the campfire beside the lake; brushing up on the constellations; being serenaded by loons; eating shell and seafish every night; watching the springtime sea-run of alewives.
You can do it all from your fabulous lakefront real estate beside Alamoosook Lake in Orland. Orland is 2.5 hours north of Portland and 4.5 hours from Boston.
