Phillips Lake, Dedham Township, Maine: Own Lakefront Property in “The Switzerland of Maine”

Brilliant Autumn Colors Reflect on Phillips Lake in Dedham Township, Maine

Phillips Lake in Dedham Township, is a stunningly beautiful lake in the Bangor Lakes Region. Lakefront property owners have long appreciated this area of lakes and mountains that reminded early travelers of Lucerne, Switzerland. Consequently, they gave it the names “Lucerne-in-Maine” and “Switzerland of Maine.” Who wouldn’t love this area? Set in the shadow of Bald Mountain and other mountains and hills clustered in the area, you’ll take one look and understand why this reminded them of the old country.

Nathan Phillips was the first settler, arriving in 1810. He built a cabin near the shores of the lake, but later built another on the site of the Lucerne Inn, aka The Lake House.

Originally called Fitts Pond, Phillips Lake encompasses 859 acres and has a maximum depth of 98 feet, with a mean depth of 40 feet. This deep, crystal clear spring-fed lake has above average water quality. There are no known invasives on Phillips Lake.
What kind of fish will you catch? Landlocked salmon, lake trout and smallmouth bass form the principal fisheries of the lake. And where’s the boat launch? You’ll have limited access to the lake via a narrow, gravel ramp located on Pearl Point Road, off Poplar Road.
Granite boulders and numerous islands are sprinkled about Phillips Lake. Through an easement by the Great Pond Mountain Conservation Trust, you can access six of the undeveloped islands at the south end, Shelter, Patmos, Treasure, Fortune, Mystery and Moccasin. The islands are forested and rocky; they may be explored during the day only, and no camping or open fires are allowed.
With a circumference of 12 miles, including lots of coves, there’s plenty of area to explore along the edge of the lake as well. Go for an early morning canoe or kayak ride. Boat, swim or fish all day. And then relax on the deck or dock of your waterfront real estate and enjoy the sun setting behind the mountains.
Located midway between Bangor and Ellsworth (each 15 minutes away), your never far from any amenities you may need. About 45 minutes away is Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park–a must see when you stay at your lakefront property.
Classic Maine camps, cabins and cottages, as well as modern homes dot the granite and forested landscape around the lake. To learn more about lakefront property listings on Phillips Lake, click on the green box above.
