Crystal Clear Day on Androscoggin Lake in Wayne, Maine

The Androscoggin Yacht Club on Androscoggin Lake is located just off of Route 133 in Wayne, Maine. Formed in 1909, the club is one of the oldest in the United States and is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places.

Though the club was incorporated for the “promotion of the yachting and boating on the waters of Lakes Androscoggin and Pocasset, protection and preservation of the fishes and game on the waters thereof and care and improvement of the shores of said lakes,” you don’t need to own a boat to join. They also offer swimming and sailing lessons, and membership includes use of the club facilities. Many social events provide both sailors and non-sailors with opportunities for fun and companionship.
The club history includes the following: “The original dues for the Club had been $2.00, but they were soon raised to $4.00 and at one point $9.00. In 1921, it was decided to admit women to membership and the dues were set at $6.00 for men and $3.00 for women. The addition of the women added the names of the wives to members as well as of other women to the list of the Club, and a Social Committee was elected to have charge of dances, suppers, and social activities.
Around 1919 the AY Needle Club was first noticed in the club records. “Tuesdays were considered ‘Needle Club’ day at the Club. Members gathered on the club’s porch with their sewing bags. This continued throughout the 1920s and 1930s. The Yacht Club ‘Bean Suppers’ were often planned during the Needle Club days.”
Androscoggin Lake’s exceptional beauty, north-south orientation and prevailing westerly breezes make it a natural for those who enjoy the best of sailing.
For the anglers, the principal fisheries are smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, yellow perch and chain pickerel. Plentiful fishing structure is provided by docks, coves, ledges and brush along the shoreline.
Androscoggin Lake has been know to produce unusually large chain pickerel and bass. Joseph Arsenault set the state record in 1992 with the catch of a 6 lb, 8 oz. chain pickerel.
One stipulation of joining the Androscoggin Yacht Club is that you must be a resident of Wayne. Wayne is a quintessential New England village with two churches, a library, general store and specialty shops on Main Street. It is one of the prettiest villages in Maine. Set on the northwest shoreline of Androscoggin Lake and south of Pocasset Lake, some describe it as an “Interlachen” village. Wayne is located only three hours from Boston and just over an hour from Portland.
So . . . when you are thinking about purchasing lakefront property, think Wayne, Maine. And then think about joining the Androscoggin Yacht Club.
