Camp Sunshine on Sebago Lake, Casco, Maine: A Ray of Light For Many

Camp Sunshine on Sebago Lake in Casco, Maine, has been offering week-long getaways for children coping with illnesses for over 30 years. One of the unique things about the camp is that families are invited to join their children for this respite week–and it’s all at no cost to them.

Dr. Larry Gould and Anna Gould, co-founders of Point Sebago Resort, started Camp Sunshine in 1984 after viewing a television program about a similar camp for children with cancer. At that time, they donated four weeks of the resort facilities and personnel to families with children suffering from life-threatening illnesses. In 2001, Camp Sunshine expanded and became a year-round facility located on 24 acres that the Goulds donated adjacent to the resort.
Dr. Gould earned a PhD from MIT and was chairman/CEO of a Fortune 500 company before owning/operating the resort. He passed away on February 13, 2015, but his legacy will continue as a ray of hope for so many families from across the United States and globe.
Each week-long session at Camp Sunshine is illness-specific. It provides children, their siblings and parents, an opportunity to have fun and fellowship with others going through the same experience. In the midst of their stress, camp provides them with a week of normalcy.
The campus includes an 18-hole mini-golf course, archery range, amphitheater, playground, nature trails, basketball courts and the Viterbi Family Activity Center with its heated indoor pool, game rooms, library and computer center.
And then there’s the lake and waterfront activities. Sebago Lake is Maine’s second largest lake. The Native American  name, “Sebago,” means “Great Stretch of Water.” This water stretches eight miles wide and twelve miles long.
The camp facilities are wheelchair accessible. On-site, there is 24-hour medical and pyschosocial support.
Dr. Gould and Anna Gould recognized the need to meet the needs of the whole family at each stage of the journey. Time spent at camp is meant to create wonderful experiences and strengthen families through unforgettable, medically-supervised programs. The kids get to be kids for a week. Campfires, art projects, skits–all provide an escape from the rigors of illness. It couldn’t have happened without the generosity of the Goulds, as well as caring donors and hundreds of volunteers.
Camp Sunshine is a powerful story of the celebration of life. Though Dr. Gould has passed away, his generosity will continue to benefit many in the years to come.
