Sandy Pond, Freedom, Maine: A Place to Unplug from the World
May 20th, 2012 categories: Belgrade Lakes Region
Sandy Pond in scenic central Maine
Sandy Pond in Freedom, Maine, provides lakefront property owners with the quintessential secluded pond. Only a few cabins and cottages are located here–for the most part the shoreline is undeveloped.
At 430 acres, Sandy Pond has a maximum depth of 11 feet. The water quality is below average. Being shallow and weedy in sections, it’s a prime spot for largemouth bass, pickerel and yellow perch. Fish early in the morning or later in the evening and we can almost guarantee you success. You’ll be telling fish stories as you’ll have plenty of areas to hunt for them–sunken logs, stumps and lily pads. A boat launch is easily accessible off of Pleasant Street near the edge of Freedom Village.
Several peninsulas jut out into the pond and small islands dot it. If you are boating, you might want to land at one of these and get out to swim. There are many coves to explore along the shoreline and the shallow wetlands provide perfect habitat for nesting birds and other wildlife.
From the pond you’ll see the three impressive wind turbines known as the Beaver Ridge Wind Power Project.
According to the 2010 US Census, Freedom is home to 719 citizens. Johnny’s Selected Seeds is located here–a home-grown seed supplier. The village is located about 25 minutes from both Belfast to the east and Waterville to the west.
If you feel the need to step away from your waterfront real estate, it’s only a day trip to coastal points including Freeport, Camden, Belfast, Acadia and Bar Harbor. While you’re out, you may want to grab some lobsters and steamers and return to your vacation getaway on Sandy Pond to enjoy them.
Sandy Pond is so quiet and secluded that you may decide you don’t even want to take a day trip. Instead, you might want to just swim, kayak, fish, read, and sleep. Stay put as you unplug from the world and recharge your batteries.

Pleasant Pond in Central Maine: Lakefront Views to Remember
May 10th, 2012 categories: Belgrade Lakes Region
Pleasant Lake: Some of the Best Bass Fishing in central Maine
Pleasant Pond and Upper Pleasant Pond (Mud Pond), located in the towns of Gardiner, West Gardiner, Richmond and Litchfield, are great choices when you are in the market for Maine lakefront property. The ponds are situated in the Cobbosseecontee Stream drainage.
Pleasant Pond is 3.5 miles long and is connected via a culvert to Upper Pleasant Pond, which is 2.5 miles long. Encompassing a total of 797 acres, the ponds have a maximum depth of 26 feet with a minimum depth of 10 feet. There is a state-owned boat launch on Thorofare Road in Litchfield. The water quality is above average.
The ponds are known as one of the best bass fishing spots in central Maine. The abundant weedy areas provide ideal habitat for the principal fisheries of largemouth bass and chain pickerel.
Variable leaf milfoil was discovered in Pleasant Pond and the Four Towns Watershed Association built a DASH boat (Diver-Assisted Suction Harvester) with monies from the Maine Milfoil Initiative to help eradicate it.
As you paddle along the length of ponds, enjoying the view of emerald green pastures and rolling hills, be on the lookout for osprey, loons and bald eagles as they dive for fish. Explore the marsh south of Route 197. Here you’ll probably see floating mats of vegetation created from freshly cut cattails and mud–these are muskrat platforms. Listen and look–you’ll probably hear and see the muskrats.
Peacock Beach State Park is an ideal destination via car or boat. Covering 100 acres, it has a small beach and swimming area. A few picnic tables and grills dot the shoreline.
After a day of paddling, you might enjoy a sauna at the Richmond Sauna Bed and Breakfast. For a nominal fee, the B&B offers “Finnish style wood-fired sauna rooms, hot tub and heated pool in a secluded, clothing-optional setting.”
The towns and villages surrounding Pleasant Pond are fun to explore–especially for Maine-made items and antiques. And if you want to move further about, from your waterfront cabin or cottage, you’re within two hours of Maine’s primary attractions: Moosehead Lake, Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor. Closer to your vacation getaway is LL Bean in Freeport and Boothbay Harbor.
Curl up with a good book on the deck of your lakefront cottage. Paddle your days away exploring the ponds and wildlife. Or take off for an excursion to the Maine coast or mountains. It’s all easily accessible when you own waterfront real estate in Gardiner, Litchfield or Richmond. McGrath Pond, Belgrade & Oakland, Maine: Calming Oasis in Belgrade Lakes Region
May 3rd, 2012 categories: Belgrade Lakes Region
Pleasant Point Beach on McGrath Pond in the Belgrade Lakes Region of Maine
McGrath Pond is nestled in the heart of the Belgrade Lakes Region of Maine. Of the seven lakes that make up the Belgrade Lakes chain, McGrath Pond is the smallest and one of the lesser known. That’ good news if you’re searching for a quiet piece of lakefront real estate.
Encompassing 467 acres, the spring-fed McGrath Pond has a maximum depth of 27 feet with a mean depth of 16. The principle fisheries include brown trout, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, chain pickerel and white perch. Water quality testing indicates gives this pond an above average rating.
The pond is located in the towns of Belgrade and Oakland. Pleasant Point Beach is a thirty-acre community park situated on the pond shore in Oakland. The park includes a ballfield, beach, picnic tables, grills and a playground.
McGrath Pond is linked to Salmon lake via a narrow thoroughfare. The McGrath Pond/Salmon Lake Association has as its mission to “preserve and protect the natural character, enhance the water quality and promote responsible use of the lakes for the benefit of all.”
If you are looking for waterfront property in a lovely, quiet spot, yet close to stores and civilization, then search no further. Even the road names are indicative of the area: Tranquilty Trail, Pinewoods Trail, Random Way, Birch Meadows. Quiet coves with shallow, sandy shore frontage are the norm along the 6.9 mile perimeter of the pond. When you spend your vacations here, you’ll feel like you are miles from crowds, yet it’s easy to get to shops.
A trip to Belgrade isn’t complete without a stop at Day’s Store on Main Street. From fresh meats and souvenirs to fishing tackle and licenses, you’ll find most of what you need, but it’s the fresh doughnuts they make each morning that I guarantee will find you returning to Day’s. And Lakeside Scoops is open seasonally on the side of the store. If you can’t find something in Belgrade, you’ll surely locate it just a short distance away in Augusta or Waterville.
Golfers will love the championship Belgrade Lakes Golf Club, which has a five-star rating. It’s listed as “one of the best public golf courses to play in the United States” by Golf Digest. For the younger crowd who want to improve their strokes on the green or court, check out the Maine Golf and Tennis Academy.
Own your own rustic cabin on beautiful McGrath Pond and enjoy cool summer nights, campfires and the call of the loons. Let it become your calming oasis. To learn more about Maine lakefront property listings for sale on McGrath Pond, click on the green button above.

Lake Winnecook, (Unity Pond) Unity, Maine: Sail Away to Your Vacation Destination
April 19th, 2012 categories: Belgrade Lakes Region
Relax in Your Hammock Overlooking Unity Pond
Lake Winnecook, aka Unity Pond, includes the tri-town borders of Burnham, Unity and Troy, in the Belgrade Lakes Region of Maine. Lakefront property owners find their escape from the real world on the shore of this quiet and restful pond.
Spanning 2,569 acres, Unity Pond has a maximum depth of 41 feet, with a mean depth of 17 feet. It’s 4.1 miles long and 1.9 miles wide. A maintained boat launch is located by Sandy Stream at the end of Kanokolus Road in Unity, where you’ll need to pay a small fee. Boaters should be aware that there are a variety of navigational aids on the pond. Maps are available from local town offices and retail businesses.
The principal fisheries of the pond are brown trout, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, white perch and chain pickerel. In the words of one fisherman, you can “catch some monster bass” on Unity Pond. It’s popular with anglers, but never crowded.
Fish. Sail. Canoe. Kayak. Swim. Snowmobile. Ice Skate. Ski.
Water quality testing indicates that Unity Pond’s readings are below average. The pond has a long history of nuisance algae blooms in the late summer and fall.
Beginning in 1785, European settlers cleared the vast virgin white pine forests in the area. Following this period of deforestation, farming was extensive on the lakeshore for the next 150 years. This led to the development of the canning industry in the early 1900s to process local crops. Unfortunately, effluent from a cannery was disposed of through an underground conduit leading directly into the pond. Today, the Friends of Lake Winnecook, Inc. are working with a number of state and local agencies and Unity College to restore the watershed and improve the water quality through a variety of activities including landscape design, the replacement of malfunctioning septic systems and the installation of vegetated buffer strips.
Three tributaries feed Unity Pond: Meadow Brook, which originates in a Tamarac bog and flows from the northwest; Bithers (Bog) Brook, which flows from the east; and Carlton Stream, which originates from Carlton Bog and flows from the northeast.
The one outlet for this pond is located near the train trestle in Unity. This wetland is designated as the Sandy Stream Division of the Sunhaze National Wildlife Refuge managed by the USFWS.
The small villages of Burnham, Unity and Troy are set on the rolling landscape surrounding the pond. Unity College and Lakeview Golf Course overlook the pond.
The pond is only 15 miles from Waterville and thirty minutes from all the activities and sightseeing opportunities along the Maine coast. Own a waterfront cabin or cottage here and feed your appreciation of nature with daily doses of loons, deer, and other Maine experiences.
