Formed as a large impoundment when the dam was created in about 1850, the two ponds encompass 298 acres. They provide 4.8 miles of shoreline with many inlets and islands to explore via canoe or kayak. The mean depth is 5 feet, while the maximum depth is 22 feet. There are no known invasive aquatic species and the water quality is average.
This warmwater fishery is ideal for numerous waterbirds, fish and other mammals. Common wildlife sightings include loons, cormorants, ducks, herons, bald eagles, turtles, beavers, otter and an occasional moose. The fishery features largemouth bass, chain pickerel and black crappie. The ponds are especially known for excellent bass fishing.
Wadleigh, or Wadley Pond as it is also known, is the larger and more inhabited of the two water bodies. Both are on the quiet side, however, as there is no public boat launch.  The causeway on Fryes Bridge Road separates Wadleigh from Roberts Pond.
Adjacent to Roberts Pond is the Massabesic Experimental Forest,  a 3,600 acre property owned and operated by the USDA Forest Service. There are blazed trails, including one that leads to the pond.
The Wadleigh Pond Association formed in 1970 to control the dam and make repairs. Most recently, the association built a new spillway, which become extremely important during the heavy spring rains we’ve been experiencing the past few years.
Lyman is a small town of about 4,000 residents. It’s located 30 minutes from the Atlantic Ocean, 45 minutes southwest of Portland and only two hours north of Boston.
