Do you want your lake, e.g. Kezar Lake in Lovell, Mousam Lake in  Shapleigh or Great Pond in Belgrade, Maine,  to continue to be a great place to live and recreate? Do you want to be “in the know” about what’s happening to your lake? As a lakefront property owner, perhaps you’d like to have input about the future of the lake. A lake association provides you with the opportunity to get involved.

Lakes are not just a source of fun, they’re also serious business. Joining an association will help you protect the lake or pond you love and on which our economy depends. As a lakefront property owner, you’ll be protecting your investment.
Imagine purchasing waterfront property, only to watch your lake become covered with the smelly, scummy algae bloom. Or not being able to swim or boat because of milfoil or another invasive aquatic plant infestation. Our local economy would take a significant dip if anything happened to the lakes we treasure.
If you haven’t done so already, as Maine lakefront property owners, we strongly suggest you join your local lake association. Even if you don’t live on a lake, but love to use it, consider joining the association.
Lake associations are formed to engage us all in caring for the lake, protecting the watershed that surrounds it and sometimes expanding the ways it can be enjoyed.
A lake or pond association is a volunteer-led non-profit organization that depends heavily on tax-deductible membership dues and members’ efforts to make any projects a reality.
Board members focus year-round on a mission statement. The action of the association often includes the following:
•    water quality testing, reporting and monitoring
•    native and non-native plant monitoring
•    access to Maine Congress of Lakes Association
•    education about Best Management Practices
•    Coordination of activities, e.g. boat parades
•    management of association funds for future lake efforts
•    placement/removal of water buoys
•    education on watershed issues
•    communication of lake news
Members are encouraged to attend annual meetings and join committees, which offer interesting challenges and provide valuable information about lake and water issues. This is an opportunity to be involved in making decisions about the lake you love. Through newsletters, e-mails and comprehensive Web sites, you’ll receive updates about current or critical issues.
Associations influence positive growth and development as they preserve the quality of life for all lake users. If you haven’t already done so, learn more about your local lake association. Becoming a member is a conscious decision to join with like-minded people who wish to achieve shared goals.
Browse the association’s Web site. Learn more and seriously consider joining the on-going efforts to preserve and improve the natural resource you treasure. Do it for the sake of your lake.
