People have been traveling to this lakefront community in Maine’s Western Mountain and Lakes Region for over one hundred years. For many, the excitement of a Maine adventure has been passed down from generation to generation. For others, it’s a new experience waiting to happen.

What is now Severance Lodge Club on Kezar Lake, began as a hunting and fishing camp in the late 1800s. Ben Brown recognized the beauty of the lake and surrounding mountains and had the vision to develop a hunting and fishing lodge situated to enjoy the spectacular sunsets and lake views. In 1896, Mr. Brown built a main lodge for 30 guests plus ten small cabins. Located on the eastern shore of the lake, Brown’s Camps was one of the first outfitters in the area and people were enticed here with the promise of unforgettable fishing and hunting opportunities. For years, wealthy sporting lodgers enjoyed the ideal hunting and fishing, but with the fall of the stock market, business began to decline. In 1934, the main lodge burned to the ground.

After the fire, brothers Harold and Will Severance purchased the property and immediately rebuilt the main lodge. By 1940, they changed the name for Brown’s Camps to Severance Lodge to reflect the resort it was becoming. Harold bought out his brother’s share and with his wife, Lillian, transformed the property, creating a place where people could leave behind the hustle and bustle of their city lives and enjoy the natural beauty of this place. Guests were treated to Saturday morning breakfasts atop Sabbatus Mountain, Sunday night buffets, sing alongs, cook outs, lobster dinners, dances, themed parties and so much more.

In the 1970s, the Severances were ready to retire. They updated the buildings and created the Severance Lodge Club–a condominium community. Some of the repeat guest became the first owners in the Severance Lodge Club.
Severance Lodge Club is a private community with well-appointed vacation homes that features a club house and gourmet restaurant. The restaurant is for the exclusive use of club residents, social members and rental guests. Throughout the season, activities at the Club include clambakes, tennis and fishing tournaments, sailing regattas, beach bonfires and more. You may swim at either South Beach and North Beach. Dock and mooring space is available.
