Branns Mill Pond, Dover-Foxcroft and Garland, Maine: Fishing Pole a Must for Lakefront Property Owners

A Picture Perfect Day on Branns Mill Pond in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine

Branns Mill Pond in Dover-Foxcroft and Garland, Maine, is the perfect location for lakefront property owners who like adventure as well as peace and quiet.  Surrounded by mature pines, the forest makes for a serene setting. Adding to this is the fact that there are not too many seasonal camps or year-round homes found along the shoreline of Branns Mill Pond.

The pond covers 352 acres and has a maximum depth of 15 feet with a mean depth of four feet. What’s the fishing like on Branns Mill Pond? It supports a warmwater fishery, including smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, chain pickerel and white perch. As a popular fishing lake, you’ll see some boats on the calm waters, especially around the shoreline of the islands, and people fishing from the shore. Families especially like to fish by the culvert next to the boat ramp.
Where’s the boat ramp? A state-owned boat ramp is located at the east end of the causeway in Dover-Foxcroft.
Situated in the Bangor Lakes Region, the area abounds with opportunities for adventure and exploration. On Branns Mill Pond, besides fishing in the summer and winter, it’s fun to explore the marshy upper end of the pond by canoe or kayak while watching and listening for wildlife. Other activities in the area include snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and 4-wheeling on the nearby ITS 82. Great hiking destinations are the Appalachian Trail, Mount Katahdin and Boarstone Mountain. For downhill skiers, you’ll find Sugarloaf USA to your liking. And there’s great snowboarding and tubing at Herman Mountain.
Brann’s Mill is a village at the lower end of the pond. Originally, a saw mill and shingle mill were located there. Remnants of the former dam that provided water for these mills is still visible.
Garland is a small, scenic village, while Dover-Foxcroft offers all the amenities you’ll need, including the 46-bed acute care Mayo Regional Hospital. The twin towns of Dover and Foxcroft, situated along the Piscataquis River, were friendly rivals until they joined forces in 1922 to become Maine’s only hyphenated town.
Lots of fun activities occur in Dover-Foxcroft throughout the year including the following: the annual Kiwanis Club Piscataquis River Canoe Race from Guilford to Dover-Foxcroft, Homecoming Celebration each summer, the Piscataquis Valley Fair in August, and the Maine Highlands State Championship Sled Dog Race.
