At 662 acres, Quantabacook Lake is three miles long and a half mile wide. The maximum depth is 51 feet, with a mean depth of 21 feet. The water quality is average.It’s been described as a “beautiful, big, deep fishable lake.” The principal fisheries are brown trout, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, white perch and chain pickerel. A primitive boat launch is tucked into the woods near Bartlett Stream off Route 3.
The many isolated coves around the 8.3 mile perimeter of Quantabacook are bordered by lush low marshes. The shallow waters of the inlet stream on the northwestern end and the outlet on the southern end are well worth exploring. An outstanding fern ecosystem is located near the northeast end of the lake. And the privately owned James Dorso Wildlife Management Area is also located at the northern end. This sanctuary includes the small islet called Converse Island. It’s about 50 acres in size. Birders frequent the area.
The village of Searsmont is quintessential New England with its white steepled United Methodist Church, a cluster of homes and the Fraternity Village General Store. The store offers DVD rentals, fishing tackle, beer and wine, sandwiches and a small cafe area with free wireless internet. But . . . Fraternity Village General Store is most famous for its pizza–especially the largest and thickest aptly named “The Attitude.”
Quantabacook Lake is located far from the mundane tourist traps, yet close to the popular ocean communities of Camden and Belfast, which offer dining, shopping, day sailing, hiking and numerous other activities.
