May 19, Friday, 7am, “Spring Migration Bird Walks,” each spring songbirds head north from Central and South America to breed in Maine, the Maritimes and Canada. Some stop here to breed or rest and feed before moving on. Hallowell’s City Forest is a great place to spot migrants like this chestnut-sided warbler. Before these small visitors head north or are obscured by leaves, join the Hallowell Conservation Commission and the Augusta Birding Club on a morning walk at the Res, free, Hallowell’s City Forest and Recreation Area, Town Farm Road, Hallowell. May 19, Friday, 8pm, “Music of West Java, Indonesia,” a program of traditional and contemporary music performed on Bates’ gamelan instruments by students in the course “Performing Musical Art of Indonesia, special guests are Een Herdiani, a dancer and director of a conservatory for the arts in West Java; and Undang Sumarna, a master drummer who teaches West Javanese gamelan at the University of California, Santa Cruz, free, Olin Concert Hall, Bates College,75 Russell St., Lewiston. May 20, Saturday, 9am-5pm, “Lebanon 250th Anniversary Festival,” the festival will feature a 5k run, a pancake breakfast, vendors from throughout the area, a magic show and a lot of fun & games for the kids. The event will culminate with a concert by Hilton Park, who were up for “Best Album” at the New England Music Awards this year. The event will also coincide with MSAD 60’s Celebration of Learning and a book sale at the Martha Sawyer Community Library, where local authors – Karri Moser, Sommer Thompson and Frank Vasalle – will be autographing copies of their works, free, Hanson Elementary School, 53 Upper Guinea Road, Lebanon. May 20, Saturday, 5pm, “Sportsmen & the Maine Sporting Camp Tradition: a 3D Historical Experience,” take a look back in time – updated with modern imaging technologies, the Friends of the Maine State Museum, in collaboration with the Maine State Museum, the Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine and Photoarchive3D, have created an innovative look at the rich tradition of Maine sportsmen and the sporting camp tradition, Bernard Fishman, Director of the Maine State Museum, will lead an engaging talk about the never-before-seen 3D images with supporting commentary from Director of the Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine, David Trahan, the multi-media project creates a deep and illustrative journey into a pastime that spawned ingenuity, political debate, community connections, new economies and more, the collaborative work includes eighty- plus historic stereo view images from the 1860s through the 1890s that have been digitally transformed into 3D images, 5:00 p.m. Refreshments/Cash Bar & Auction Preview, 5:30 p.m. Catered Dinner, 6:30 p.m. Multi-Media 3D Narrated Show & Sportsmen’s Oral History Premiere, 8:00 p.m. Live Auction, $60.00 per person, Augusta Elks Lodge, 397 Civic Center Dr., Augusta. May 20, Saturday, 7pm, “Katahdin Valley Boys,” one of Maine’s most popular and respected Bluegrass bands, has been thrilling audiences around Maine and northern New England since their blending of talents in 1998. The Katahdin Valley Boys were honored as recipients of the “Bluegrass Band of the Year” award for 2012 by The Maine Country Music Association and in 2008, 2009, and 2011 by the Maine Academy of Country Music. The Katahdin Valley Boys take pride in presenting their audiences with top quality, traditional, and contemporary Bluegrass and Bluegrass Gospel music.
