Apr. 11, Thursday, 12pm, “Music in the Museum: The Music of Surrealism,” program will explore the dream-like and unexpected aesthetics of surrealist music featuring French composers Erik Satie, Francis Poulenc, Arthur Honegger, Darius Milhaud as well as selections by Kurt Weill with texts by Jean Cocteau and Guillaume Apollinaire. Apr. 12-14, Friday-Sunday, 7:30pm/Fri. and Sat, 2pm/Sun, “Avenue Q,” this puppet-filled musical comedy (for adults), with music and lyrics by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx and book by Jeff Whitty, Avenue Q is an “autobiographical and biographical” coming-of-age parable, addressing the issues and anxieties associated with entering adulthood. Apr. 13, Saturday, 10:30am, “The Amanita Mushrooms of North America,” how much do we really know about those familiar mushrooms sprouting on forest floors? Those ubiquitous capped mushrooms are often of the Amanita family, and the tools of modern molecular biology recently led to an amazing discovery about their evolutionary past. Apr. 13, Saturday, 2pm, “Tanglewood Marionettes: Fairy Circus,” Tanglewood Marionettes’ presentation of The Fairy Circus begins with a brief demonstration of the art of puppetry. Through humorous interplay, the audience will learn about various forms of puppets, from the simple glove puppet to the sophisticated marionette. Featuring over twenty beautifully hand-crafted marionettes, The Fairy Circus is a showcase for turn-of-the-century-style trick puppetry. The puppets will dance, play instruments, juggle, contort, transform, and fly through the air with the greatest of ease, all to the best-loved music of favorite composers. This special performance is an 80th birthday celebration for long-time community volunteer, Pat Masonheimer. Apr. 13, Saturday, 7:30pm, “From Dizzy: Colby College Jazz Band,” directed by Eric Thomas, we explore the roots of bebop first planted by Dizzy Gillespie in the Latin jazz featured in his later work.
