Sept. 8, Saturday, 1-4pm, “Pie Social and the Maine Squeeze Accordion Ensemble,” journey into the Past with a Pie Baking Contest, Pie Sale, Music on the Front Lawn, Tours of the Washburn Mansion and the One-Room Schoolhouse, Against a backdrop of rolling fields and woodlands, history and music will fill the autumn air along with the delicious aroma of homemade pies of every type, served plain or with real whipped cream. Whole pies will be for sale for $13 while slices are served up for a donation. All proceeds support the Norlands’ museum and farm programs, so have a second piece! In the shade of the old maple trees on the front lawn, visitors will enjoy the festive tunes of The Maine Squeeze Accordion Ensemble from southern Maine. The Ensemble plays eclectic ethnic music from around the world, from traditional foot-tapping polkas to waltzes to zydeco, as well as original tunes and children’s songs. Sept. 8, Saturday, 9:30am-12:30pm, “Meet the Evergreens Walk,” Evergreen trees and ferns are just that—forever green. We’ll point out family traits and variations as we examine needles, cones, conifer bark, and fern fronds. If trail conditions are good, we’ll climb to the summit of Flat Hill, otherwise, we’ll circle Perky’s Path. Location: Flat Hill parking lot, Heald Pond Road, Lovell. Sept. 8, Saturday, 10am, “Landscaping for Wildlife with Deb Perkins,” join us at this beautiful botanical-themed shop for Deb’s engaging and informative slide show. You will learn ways to improve habitat quality for a diversity of wildlife from pollinators to birds, and beyond. Deb will discuss how to build native plant communities that support an array of species and promote biodiversity. Walk away inspired, and ready to do some fall planting. Groundcover is not charging a fee for this event but would like folks to try and let them know if they are attending. (This allows them to adjust the space accordingly.) The twangy country rock and roll sounds of this fun band, is fronted by SMAC favorite and crooner Ward Hayden. A smooth, authentic honky tonk/early rock & roll vibe with some country-folk thrown in there too.
