Feb. 19, Friday. 8pm, “Jesse Dee,” soul singer extraordinaire. We just love this guy. A modern day trailblazer with his own tunes while embracing the old school soul greats before him. Sharing the stage with the likes of Al Green and James Hunter and others, Jess is finding his own voice and style in a most artsrtic soul fashion. He is one of my favorite singers.eveah! He may not be a household word yet, but every time he is here, people wonder why. Barn Burners are held in our Quisisana Lobby Barn…little more casual, more of a club atmosphere, but as always a great room to hear music, $20, Stone Mountain Arts Center, 695 Dugway Rd, Brownfield. Feb. 20, Saturday, 11am-4pm, “Cabin Fever Reliever Living History,” Stop by for some old-time fun, meet the neighbors and make new friends. Activities are provided by interpreters in period clothing portraying people of the 1800’s Norlands neighborhood or members of the original Livermore Washburn family. Visitors will gain an understanding of various types of work and play in the 19th century. Ice harvesting demonstrations take place on Bartlett pond, just down the hill from the Norlands. Between 11:00am-12:30pm and again from 1:30pm-3:00pm, join Norlands’ staff out on the pond. They will demonstrate the many steps to harvesting ice using 19th-century methods. The school’marm will be ready to greet you in the one-room schoolhouse. Be a scholar of 1853 and participate in a spelling bee at 12:30pm. Take a tour of the elegant Washburn mansion. Did you know that the Norlands is the ancestral home of Maine’s Civil War Governor, Israel Washburn, Jr., and his brother, Cadwallader, the founder of Gold Medal Flour? Several family stories will be shared on the tour of this magnificent home. The farmer’s cottage will be a busy place with old-fashioned chores and games. Play an artifact game to investigate how period items were used. Children will have a chance to churn butter at noon and again at 2:00pm. Between churning butter, the farm wives will be baking cookies in the woodstove. Warm up with a cookie and a cup of hot chocolate, while supplies last. In the dining room, perhaps you help string some apples for drying, plant a seed for spring, or make a period craft. Meet farmer “Ed Pratt” in the tool shed at 11:30am and again at 3:00pm. He will demonstrate how to hand-craft cedar shingles. Take a horse-drawn sleigh ride around the beautiful grounds. This year, if the snow conditions are right, we will bring out the 19th-century snow roller. These massive, horse-drawn wooden rollers were used to pack down roads to make sleigh traveling in the winter possible. Snow roller rides are for ages 6+ and children must be accompanied by an adult. This activity depends on the snow condition as too much snow can be a challenge for the horses. A light lunch of baked beans and chicken salad sandwiches will be for sale, by donation, in the Washburn kitchen. Bring your snowshoes and walk the historic carriage trail to the Pools of Simeon, reflecting pools designed in 1903 by the youngest Washburn brother, William Drew. Enjoy nature’s beauty as walk amongst the massive snow-covered king pine trees. A bit of a climb takes you to an overlook with a view of Mt. Washington on a clear day, $8/adults, $5/children age 12 and under, free/ages 5 and under, $20/family rate, Washburn-Norlands Living History Center, 290 Norlands Rd, Livermore.
