“The Ghosts of Johnson City,” Unity College for the Performing Arts

Feb. 11, Thursday, 7pm, “National Theatre Live-Coriolanus,” Shakespeare’s searing tragedy of political manipulation and revenge, Coriolanus features an Evening Standard Award-winning performance from Tom Hiddleston (The Avengers, War Horse (film), BBC’s The Hollow Crown) in the title role, directed by the Donmar’s Artistic Director Josie Rourke. The full company includes Jacqueline Boatswain, Peter De Jersey, Alfred Enoch, Deborah Findlay, Hadley Fraser, Mark Gatiss, Birgitte Hjort Sørensen, Elliot Levey, Rochenda Sandall, Helen Schlesinger, Mark Stanley and Dwane Walcott. When an old adversary threatens Rome, the city calls once more on her hero and defender: Coriolanus. But he has enemies at home too. Feb. 12, Friday, 6pm, “Bangor Valentine’s Heart Gala,” the evening will begin with a cocktail hour intermingled with a silent auction. Guests will be entertained during dinner with a live auction, emceed by WVOM’s Ric Tyler, and a heart-warming dinner program emceed by WVII 7/Fox 22’s Craig Colson and Big 104 FM’s Deb Neuman. St. Joseph Healthcare will receive the 2016 Gold Heart Award for their work to improve the heart health of the Greater Bangor community. Feb. 12, Friday, 7pm, “The Ghosts of Johnson City,” another homegrown Maine favorite, they play Dark Americana and their sound is mesmerizing. Their music is interesting not only in its beautiful eeriness, but also in its historical content. The Ghosts of Johnson City seek to take listeners on a musical journey to some of the darkest hollows of America’s greatest historical calamities and personal tragedies, from the battlefields of the Civil War and deepest Kentucky coal mines to the whaling grounds of the North Atlantic. The group presents simple and soulful versions of old mountain music, Civil War songs, coal-mining melodies, disaster chronicles, haunting murder ballads and tunes of love and loss in times of poverty, $15, Unity College Center for the Performing Arts, 42 Depot St, Unity. Feb. 13, Saturday, 10-11:30am, “Hands-on History-Victorian Valentines,” a look at Valentine traditions from years gone by during the February “Hands-On History” session at the historic Thomas A. Feb. 13, Saturday, 7:30pm, “Valentine’s Day Concert with Noel Paul Stookey,” for its annual Pops concert, the Bangor Symphony Orchestra is celebrating Valentine’s Day with Folk legend Noel Paul Stookey of Peter, Paul and Mary, the singer-songwriter takes the stage at the Collins Center for the Arts with BSO Music Director and Conductor Lucas Richman for a program that will highlight hits from Stookey’s long career with a new twist: orchestral accompaniment. The first half of the concert will feature the BSO playing romantic favorites from classical music and film, including Mendelssohn’s famous Wedding March and Leonard Bernstein’s Overture to West Side Story. When Stookey takes the stage, audiences will hear favorites such as “Leaving on a Jet Plane” and “Wedding Song” backed by the orchestra, as well as solo works including “Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright” and “Love Rules!,” $28-$51, Collins Center for the Arts, 2 Flagstaff Rd, Orono.
