Dec. 22, Tuesday, 10am, “Winter Solstice Hike & Hearty Soup with Kit Pfeiffer,” Even though the temperatures outside are unseasonably warm December 22 is the day when we welcome the arrival of winter. For us in the Northern Hemisphere, the December solstice marks the longest night and shortest day of the year. Celebrate the official arrival of winter by joining Maine Master Naturalist Kit Pfeiffer of the Whitefield Trails Committee on December 22 at 10:00 a.m. on a short hike (1.2 miles round trip) on their newest trail along the West Branch of the Sheepscot River. After your hike enjoy a hearty bowl of soup (Dutch treat) and conversations about winter birding as you gather at the Sheepscot General Store on the Townhouse Road in Whitefield. A great way to celebrate the official arrival of winter. Meet at the parking lot for the Whitefield Salmon Preserve on the Howe Road (directions at http://www.sheepscot.org/whitefield-salmon-preserve-whitefield/). Wear sturdy shoes and layers appropriate for the weather. Bring a hot or cold beverage, your camera, and binoculars, $5/meal at Sheepscot General Store not included, Specturm Generations Coastal Community Center, 521 Main St, Damariscotta.
