“Model Railroad Celebration,” Maine State Museum, Augusta

Dec. 3-5, Thursday-Saturday, 7pm, “UMA Jazz (and more) Week,” superb concerts featuring both student and faculty performers, held each fall and spring semester, Thursday presented Theater of the Mind, Friday is The Jazzmanian Devils and Sassquatch (R&B/Rock/Jazz Fusion), Saturday performers include Envok (Jazz vocal ensemble) and Jazz on Tour, free, Jewett Hall Auditorium, UMA, 46 University Drive, Augusta. Dec. 3-6, Thursday-Sunday, 7pm/Thurs.-Sat, 2pm/Sun, “Merry Christmas, Strega Nona, A Musical Play,” the play is perfect for the whole family, Tomie de Paola’s beloved Strega Nona, performed by dancer Jodi Stebbins (Augusta), comes to life in this musical stage adaptation. Big Anthony, performed by Marshall Smith (Starks), nearly ruins Christmas and it seems like nothing but a miracle can save Strega Nona’s feast. Dec. 3, Thursday, 7pm, “Victorian Christmas Celebration,” make your yuletide bright at our Victorian Christmas Celebration. Dec. 4-5, Friday-Saturday, 9am-4pm/Fri, 10am-3pm/Sat, “Model Railroad Celebration,” meet members of the Maine 3-Railers and the Great Falls Model Railroad Club and check out the display of operating G, HO, and O-gauge model trains and accessories. Members of both clubs will operate the layouts all day and will be available to answer questions regarding model railroading, free, Maine State Museum, 83 State House Station, Augusta. Dec. 5, Saturday, 7:30pm, “Pihcintu Choir,” the Pihcintu Mulitcultural Chorus helps restart young lives. War-torn villages, bloodshed, refugee camps, famine, and political turmoil were devastating realities for many of these young singers before being embraced by the warmth, companionship, and harmony that Pihcintu provides. Through the healing power of music, these vulnerable, yet brave, young women have learned to trust, hope and laugh again. The children and their music are transformative. Dec. 9, Wednesday, 7pm, “Annual Messiah Sing Along,” the Augusta Symphony Orchestra, Paul Ross conductor, will be perform several selections from Handel’s Messiaht. Soloists include Cynthia McGuire-soprano, Judith Plano-alto and Stefan Pakulski-bass along with the audience chorus.
