Oct. 9-11, Friday-Sunday, all day events, “Fall Festival at Sunday River,” celebrate the end of summer with live music, the always entertaining 16th Annual North American Wife Carrying Championship(R), the 32nd Annual Blue Mountain Arts & Crafts Fair, and a full array of activities for the whole family, Sunday River Ski Resort, Newry. Oct. 10, Saturday, 8am-1pm, “Pate to Pond-Foliage Hike,” trap on your hiking boots for this full day of hiking two of the area’s most treasured preserves, Bald Pate Mountain and Holt Pond Preserve. Our Stewardship Manager Jon Evans will guide trekkers to the summit of Bald Pate Mountain and share stories of its history, diverse flora and fauna and management considerations. From there, Adam Perron, Director of Education at Lakes Environmental Association (LEA), will lead guests to Holt Pond Preserve to provide his expertise on this fascinating wetland ecosystem. Guests may do just the mountain portion (1.6 miles) or both portions (5+ miles). Vehicles will be left at Holt Pond to provide shuttle back to Bald Pate, moderate to strenuous hike due to length, free, Meet at Bald Pate’s parking lot on Rte. 107, South Bridgton. Oct. 10, Saturday, 10am-3:30pm, “Shaker Village Fall Harvest Festival,” freshly-picked apples from the historic Shaker orchards will be offered for sale along with free cider-pressing; bring your own apples or purchase them at the Shaker Store, homemade apple fritters, and much more!
