LEA Executive Director Peter Lowell with Dr. Bridie McGreavy

by Leigh Macmillen Hayes
Lakes Environmental Association recently announced that it purchased property adjacent to Pondicherry Park in Bridgton and is developing the Maine Lake Science Center. Our hats are off the Executive Director Peter Lowell, the LEA staff and Board of Directors for having the foresight to build a center that will implement scientific research to expand our understanding of water quality and what we all need to do to keep our lakes and ponds clean.

To that end, Lowell has also announced the appointment of Dr. Bridie McGreavy as the director of the Maine Lake Science Center. “Bridie received a Ph.D. in communication and sustainability science from the University of Maine in 2013,” says Lowell. “She is currently a Postdoctoral Researcher with the New England Sustainability Consortium at the Senator George J. Mitchell Center for Sustainability Solutions. Her research focuses on understanding and improving the use of science in decision making about water quality.”
Bridie has a long history with LEA, beginning as a summer intern in 1999 before she served as Education Director for almost ten years. While at LEA, she also received a Master’s degree from Antioch University New England in Environmental Studies and Conservation Biology. Lowell expressed the sentiments of the LEA Board of Directors and staff, “Bridie is the perfect person to lead LEA’s new venture. She brings every skill needed to make the Maine Lake Science Center a significant leader in and partner for lake protection. We are all delighted to have her back at LEA, especially in this capacity.”
Planning for the Center has been underway for six years and a lead gift from an anonymous family foundation has allowed LEA to jump start purchase of the property and construction. A public campaign to fund the Center through 2020 will begin in the spring of 2015.
