Classic Maine Camp on Thompson Lake, One of Maine’s Best

Classic and modest best describe this Maine camp on Thompson Lake in Oxford. Located at 73 Margaret’s Lane, the lakefront house was built in 1900.

Recently, Jim, the owner, shared with us how he came upon this lakefront property: “My involvement in Maine began in 1956 when I became a swimming instructor and counselor at Camp Agawam on Crescent Lake, Maine. After college law school and 3 years in the Army JACG Corp and my return to a law practice in Middletown, PA, I was lucky to rent a camp on a yearly basis starting in approximately 1967 from Don and Rita Briggs who owned Briggs Island on Lake Thompson. A friendship developed with the Briggs over the next 30 years while being their guest during both the summer and winter.

Over that period of time, I came to appreciate Lake Thompson as one of the cleanest lakes in Maine as to water quality and its peaceful and beautiful surroundings. In 1987, I found Margaret’s, a camp owned by Margaret that had been abandoned for some years. It was across from Briggs Island on the eastern shore of the lake.
The camp needed substantial work on the quarter mile dedicated driveway from the West Poland Road to the camp and much work on the camp itself. The foundation was completely rebuilt, rewired to modern standards, insulated and the interior walls covered. A well was drilled with the result that it artesian 365 days a year, producing water as soft and pure as Poland Spring Water. A modern and improved drain field was constructed to handle the sewage, the camp was repainted inside and out and over the years a master bedroom was added to the first floor along with an outdoor deck, which was turned into an additional living room or bedroom, and a modern bathroom with washer and dryer facilities. The camp will easily handle 8 guests at a time and is located 35 feet from one of the finest lakes in Maine.”
The five-room furnished house features two bedrooms and one bath in its 800 square feet. On the first level, you’ll find the kitchen and living room, plus the bathroom. The sleeping porch, which offers magnificent lake views, including sunsets, also serves as a dining area. Pine and paneling are found throughout the house.

Three steps up from the first level is the master bedroom. A stairwell in the living room leads to the second floor bedroom. The office area on the first level, with its cathedral ceilings and skylight, could serve as a third bedroom.
The 1.6 acre property is a large lot that offers plenty of privacy when you want it. The nearest neighbors are at least 100 feet away and separated by a border of trees–close enough for visits, but not too close. The lot slopes toward the lake, where wooden steps lead to the dock system and water. This property comes with 258 feet of lake frontage.
Jim says, “Thompson Lake is excellent for its bass and white trout fishing, swimming, motor boating, water skiing and sailing. The view from Margaret’s faces west, providing a beautiful sunset while enjoying the camp fire and listening to the loons call . . . The greatest feature on the lake is that it feels like your own private lake when you are using it.”
If this place is so wonderful, why is Jim selling? “The answer is,” he says, “due to the fact that I am 78 and live 565 miles south of the camp in PA and it is becoming more and more difficult to get to the camp and enjoy it. During the time that my children were growing up, there was no other place that they wanted to go than to Margaret’s.  It is my hope that the next owners and their family will get the joy out of the camp that our family received during our 27 years that I’ve owned the camp.”
Margaret’s  is within five miles of Stephen’s Memorial Hospital, Oxford Plains Speedway, the Oxford Casino, and the beautiful town of Norway, with its small town stores. The camp is approximately 35 miles from Portland and L.L. Bean in Freeport. It’s about three hours from Boston.
If you are seeking a classic Maine camp, this is your place. There’s no other quite like it on Thompson Lake.
