Quintessential Lakefront Bungalow on Long Lake in the Sebago Lakes Region of Maine
Wow! Need we say more about this classic Maine bungalow on Long Lake in Naples? The photos tell the story of this perfect lakefront retreat located at 36 Lands End Lane, but the owner, Peter, adds to the details.
The house was built as a seasonal camp in the 1930s. Peter and his family purchase it in 2005 and since have
worked to lovingly turn it into a year-round home that retains its quintessential features. “We added a basement, a new steel roof, new cedar shingle siding, new double-paned windows, new insulation, new plumbing and electric. The septic system has also been completely updated since our purchase. We also added custom lighting in the living room and bathrooms,” says Peter. “We did our best to preserve the ‘antique’ feel of the home’s interior, even as we remodeled and updated all elements of it.”
Step inside and you’ll be greeted by the classic pine interior as well as lake views. The first floor of this
1,929-square-foot house has a custom kitchen, living room with cathedral ceiling and fieldstone fireplace, breakfast bar with lakefront views, and enclosed porch with room for a dining area and conversation area. Two of the three bedrooms are located off the living room, each with a full bath.

Join the
hand-carved bears that climb the stairs. On your way up, discover an office space tucked into the landing. On the second floor, is a third bedroom with cathedral ceiling and skylight, plus a third full bath. Down under, the low clearance basement houses the washer and dryer.
What initially drew Peter and his family to the lakefront property was the “unique views of the lake, particularly the
northern sight lines toward Harrison. It is a spectacular view because of the vast expanse of the lake (approximately 11 miles in the northerly direction) with the pines hugging the shore line and the layered mountain views in the distance. From the dock, looking south, one can see the Causeway and the new bridge [in Naples]. Across the lake is
Camp Takajo, which is a wonderfully maintained and scenic camp owned by celebrity Joan London and her husband.”
Back outside, you’ll see the glorious result of Peter’s labor. “I have spent
nine years turning it into the home and gardens that I dreamed of,” he says. “ I personally built several stone walls, added new garden areas and made changes to nearly all elements of the natural space. We also added two new bluestone patios, one of which we use for campfires and the other for barbecues and eating meals.” The patios offer privacy and beauty. And then there’s the dock. which features a huge platform to set up lawn chairs. There’s also plenty of space for boats to tie up.

“The best feature of the lake,” says Peter, “is its size, which accommodates long boating trips. It is also an amazingly clean lake with
no signs of milfoil. And it’s a wonderful lake for swimming.”
The lot is approximately 1.6 acres and has about 150 feet of lake frontage. Along with enhancing the perennial gardens, Peter hired
Cabins to Castles, a local landscaping company, to turn a seasonal spring into a babbling brook–with the help of a water pump.
Family and friends will want to gather here often. Besides the three bedrooms, there is a
bunkhouse for the overflow or grandkids. And just up the hill sits a storage shed, where you can keep all of your seasonal gear.
This lakefront home provides the perfect space for all to watch an early morning sunrise, play in the water, go for long boat rides to Harrison or even through Brandy Pond and the Songo River to Sebago Lake, and enjoy an evening campfire. One of the highlights will be waving to the passengers as the
Songo River Queen, a replica of the famed Mississippi River paddle wheelers passes by each day.
If you like to golf, hike or ski, then this is the perfect location for you. There are four golf courses within an easy drive, including the
Naples Golf and Country Club. Hikes are numerous in the area and range from as easy as a walk along the
Naples Causeway to climbing Pleasant Mountain in Bridgton and Denmark. Ski at
Shawnee Peak in Bridgton, where you may even enjoy night skiing.
So, why, you ask, are they selling
this piece of paradise? Peter’s answer, “We spend most of the year in Florida and want to downsize our New England property. We also need to move closer to our children.”
Pull into the driveway of 36 Lands End Lane, Naples, Maine, which is the last house on the tarred roadway and
let the magic of this beautiful waterfront retreat take over. You may never want to leave, but of course, you will. Venture out and discover all that Naples and the Sebago Lakes Region has to offer.
