Venture to this Central Maine location in the Maine Highlands and you’ll discover that it’s not only a place to get away from it all, but also a great jumping off point for outdoor adventures.
Enjoy the fishing and panoramic views. Listen to the chorus of frogs and birds. Watch for bald eagles. Nap in a hammock by the water’s edge. Gather round the campfire to share stories. Gaze at stars in the clear, night sky. Fall asleep to the cry of the loon.
A classic Maine camp, cottage or cabin on Piper Pond also provides easy access to Baxter State Park, Mount Katahdin and Moosehead Lake. Closer to home, you’ll find Barrows Falls on the Piscataquis River, Brown Hill, Walker Hill and others. It’s also located near 1,000 miles of designated ATV trails–you can ride to Greenville, Jackman, The Forks, Bingham and Cambridge.
The small village of Abbot sits at the edge of the Great North Woods. The 2010 census indicated that the population was 714 people. The town, which in the late 1700s was named for John Abbott (with a double “t” at the end), a treasurer of Bowdoin College, straddles Kingsbury Stream and has one store and a bakery. On the way into town, you’ll be welcomed by a sign, which reads “Welcome to Abbot, Maine’s #1 Town.”
We think you’ll agree it’s #1 after spending time here. Dover-Foxcroft is close by and you’ll find all of the amenities there. Abbot is under three hours from Portland and four hours from Boston.
