March 7, Friday, 8:00 p.m., “Cowboy Junkies,” this cool breeze of a band has played and stayed together since 1985, one review I read called them “music lifers,” but their independent spirit and style keeps their shows fresh as they constantly reinvent the Junkies wheel…and the audience is always along for the ride, this Canadian band was alternative way before people were relating that word to music, their most successful album was done in one day with one microphone, in one a room…a church hall, the “Trinity Sessions” was the beginning of a successful career of recording and touring. Hard to peg, they float calmly from folk to jazz, to country to rock, to blues and pop, while making it all their own, they do very special shows when they come up here to to country, and it seems like it is too long a wait between visits, for my money hearing Margo sing “Blue Moon” is worth two trips and a half, but sadly they will only be here for one show this time, don’t miss it…will be a fast sell out, $65, plus $4 handling fee, Stone Mountain Arts Center, 695 Dug Way Road, Brownfield. FMI: 207-935-7292, www.stonemountainartscenter.com.

All of the ensembles will be competing at the State Instrumental Festival this weekend, so what better way to send them off?, free, Leura Hill Eastman Performing Arts Center, 18 Bradley Street, Fryeburg.
