Nov. 22, Friday, 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., “Bernice Abbott’s Portrait of Maine,” A pre-eminent American photographer, Abbott moved to Monson, Maine, in the 1960’s and created a significant body of work documenting life in her new home state. Her Portarait of Maine (1968), a collaboration with writer, artist and friend Chenoweth Hall, was Abbott’s final book and comprises photographs from across the state in Abbott’s signature documentary style. Upon her arrival, she meets an eccentric royal family desperate to save their kingdom from domination by an evil, bowler-hatted villain. A hidden doorway through a mountain, magic cake, a lost ring and a child’s game hold the secrets that our heroine must unravel as she adopts a new kind of logic to save the day. Adding to the magic, a trio of beautiful sirens enchants the characters with a jazzy score of French songs.
