Chemo Pond, Parks Pond and Lower Springy Pond, Clifton, Maine: Three Quiet Lakefront Real Estate Gems

Sunrise on Chemo Pond, Clifton, Maine

Chemo Pond, Parks Pond and Lower Springy Pond in Clifton, Maine, offer lakefront property owners a gateway to the Maine Highlands. Located about fifteen minutes from Bangor, you’ll find peace and quiet on any of these waterbodies. And yet, all amenities will be close by.
Clifton is a small central Maine town known for its cliffs and bluffs, which offer panoramic views of the surrounding area, including the three ponds.

Chemo Pond is the largest of the three ponds. It has a surface area of 1,223 acres and an 11.7-mile perimeter. The mean depth is 13 feet, while the deepest spot is 24 feet. Chemo is an Abenaki word for large bog. There are no known invasives and the water quality is below normal.
You’ll find lots of coves to explore and breathtaking views to enjoy as you play on the lake–either canoeing, kayaking or fishing. What kind of fish might you catch here? The warmwater fishery features smallmouth bass, white perch and chain pickerel.
The pond is accessible off Route 9, aka The Airline. On the other side of Route 9, you’ll find Parks Pond and Lower Springy Pond.
Parks Pond has a surface area of 124 acres and a 2.6 mile perimeter. The mean depth is 19 feet, while the maximum depth is 28 feet. Water quality tests indicate an above average reading.
Like Chemo Pond, this warmwater fishery also features smallmouth bass, white perch and chain pickerel. There are no known aquatic invasives.
Lower Springy Pond encompasses 114 acres. It has a mean depth of nineteen feet with a maximum depth of 44 feet. Again, the water quality is above average and there are no known aquatic invasives.
Cold and warmwater species are supported in Lower Springy Pond, including splake, white perch and chain pickerel.
Own lakefront real estate on any of these three ponds and you’ll discover that life at the pond really is the perfect antidote to a stress-filled life. Wake with the sunrise. Breath in the fresh mountain air. Relax under the whispering pines. Refresh in the cool pond water. Listen to the loons. Watch the bald eagles fish.
These ponds also provide the perfect setting for one of our favorite pasttimes–stargazing. Whether you want to learn the constellations or just enjoy their twinkling reflection on the water, you can do it here. Light pollution is non-existent in this neck of the woods.
Cliffs and bluffs including Chick Hill (aka Peaked Mountain), Eagle Bluff and Parks Pond Bluff offer a backdrop for these three bodies of water. If you do choose to climb, make sure to plan on plenty of time–the views from the top are amazing and range from Mount Desert Island toward Mt. Katahdin and closer ranges including Bald Mountain, Great Pond Mountain and Schoodic.
From Portland, the trip to Clifton is two and a half hours, while it’s four and half hours from Boston. In that short time, you can make the mental switch from work-mode to vacation-mode and arrive ready to relax at your lakefront property.
