Messalonskee Lake in the Belgrade Lakes Region of Maine

Only a stone’s throw from Messalonskee Lake in the Belgrade Lakes Region of Maine are the hiking trails of Waterville. Many of them offer views of Messalonskee Stream and getaways from the busyness of life. Waterville is just over an hour from Portland and three hours from Boston.



Messalonskee Stream Trail
The 2.5-mile trail (each way) follows the stream and offers a glimpse of the past, including mill formations, a penstock and waterfall.

Inland Woods and Pine Ridge Trails
This 6.4-mile network is a series of loop trails that pass by stonewalls, a meandering stream and along old tote roads.

Runnels Hill
Located on the Colby College campus, Runnels Hill offers a 3.8-mile network of trails where one might find a quiet interlude from life’s everyday pressures. Parts of the trail are maintained for cross-country skiers.

Trail Access: Mayflower Hill Drive, Waterville
Perkins Arboretum
On this lovely 128-acre property at Colby College, a network of trails meanders for about 3.8 miles through an open field and secluded forest that has been left in its natural state.

Trail Access: Foss Parking Lot, Mayflower Hill Road, Waterville
Thomas College Trail
This short trail loops around the athletic fields and through the woods at Thomas College to the confluence of Messalonskee Stream with the Kennebec River.
Degree of Difficulty: Easy
Trail Access: Route 104, Waterville
Quarry Road Recreational Area
Part of the former Colby College ski slope, the 6.5-mile trail system includes river, forest and city views.
Degree of Difficulty: Easy, Moderate, Advanced
