Aziscohos Lake, Rangeley Lakes Region of Maine: Heed the Call of the Wild

Crystal Clear Water of Aziscohos Lake in Maine

Aziscohos Lake in the Lincoln Plantation, Parkertown and Lynchtown Townships of Maine, is a large, fairly undeveloped slice of heaven for lakefront property owners. Located in an expansive wilderness area by the New Hampshire border in the western section of the Rangeley Lakes Region, the lake is an artificial impoundment created when the Magalloway River was dammed in the early 1900s.

Covering 6,872 acres, Aziscohos (pronounced A-ziz co haus) Lake is about nineteen miles long and one mile wide. The maximum depth is 60 feet, while the mean depth is 31 feet. This long, narrow lake has above average water quality.
Aziscohos is a Native American term for devil winds. Spend some time on the lake and you’ll likely understand. At any point, unpredictable winds blow from the surrounding mountain tops down the narrow lake, creating seemingly treacherous swells and white caps.
Anglers love to fish for landlocked salmon and brook trout in the lake. The salmon run Lincoln Brook in the spring. Special fishing regulations do apply to Aziscohos, so check with the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife before casting a line. A public boat launch is located off Route 16 in Lincoln Plantation. There are no known invasive aquatic infestations.
The salmon I mentioned earlier–well, they are a favorite of black bears, so do beware if you are near Lincoln Brook in the spring. Other wildlife sightings on Aziscohos include moose, loons and chicks, deer, heron, ducks, eagles, hawks, osprey and a family of otters.
For those who really like to get away from it all, Aziscohos Lake may be just what you are looking for. Wake up to lake and mountain views. Heed the call of the wild as you set out to hike, mountain bike, canoe, kayak or snowmobile. Swim in the refreshing water. Explore the coves and tiny islands. Dig for Indian arrowheads–relics from a time gone by. Check out the paddleford truss construction of the Bennett Covered Bridge over the Magalloway River in Lincoln Plantation. Visit the tiny logging hamlet of Lynchtown. Embrace a quieter lifestyle.
Crystal clear waters, breathtaking views, a beautiful vacation setting. Aziscohos Lake will enchant you and make you wish you could stay longer.
