Fall Reflection on Togus Pond in the Belgrade Lakes Region of Maine
Togus Pond in Augusta, Maine, offers lakefront property owners plenty of space for island and cove exploration via your canoe or kayak. The islands include Coon, White’s Fisherman’s and Poor’s, while the major coves are Hayden’s, Barrow’s and Spring.
Little Togus Pond, located across Route 105 at the southern end of Togus Pond, encompasses 69 acres and has a maximum depth of 22 feet, with a mean depth of 9 feet.
Though Worromontogus is derived from an Abenaki word, its meaning isn’t clear. Suggestions include “Spring Under Mountain,” “Brook Cove” and “Small Vermillion Outlet.”
Anglers will enjoy excellent bass fishing on Togus Pond. Largemouth and smallmouth bass, plus brown trout and white perch are the principal fisheries. The state has also stocked the pond with alewife, which had been absent from Worromontogus Stream and Togus Pond since the mid-19th century.
There is no public boat launch, but residents do use the Route 105 culvert crossing as an informal public access point.
Togus Pond is part of the China Lakes area in the Belgrade Lakes Region. The three other lakes in the chain are China Lake, Webber Pond and Threemile Pond.
