Escape From the Ordinary When You Retreat to Lakefront Property on Thompson Lake in Oxford, Maine

Lakefront Home Overlooking Thompson Lake in Oxford, Maine

Escape from the ordinary when you purchase this five bedroom lakefront house at 20 Fairturn Acres on pristine Thompson Lake in Oxford, Maine. The splendor of nature and quiet beauty along with lakeside living at its finest make this a house you’ll look forward to returning to at the end of a hectic day or week. In fact, you may not want to ever leave.

The 1,920 square-foot house has a casual atmosphere, with some pine paneling, three skylights and an open concept first floor. In total, there are five bedrooms and two baths. The kitchen features a cooktop island and separate breakfast bar. There’s plenty of room for two cooks to share the space. Also on the first floor, you’ll find the living room and dining area, two small bedrooms, which could be used as a home office or den, and a full bathroom. Baseboard heat and a small wood stove make the house feel cozy. There is a back-up generator just in case.

A u-shaped stairwell leads to the second floor, which was added in 1982. Located here are three more bedrooms and a full bath. One of the smaller second floor bedrooms also has a sliding door offering a great view of the water.
Linda, the current owner, says, “Besides the location being the best feature of the property, I have to add that the open floor plan is wonderful, as is the beautiful staircase that retains the original design of the home.”
There is a crawl space beneath the house, rather than a full basement. To make up for this, you’ll find plenty of storage because there are numerous closets, plus an out building and a two car garage. The garage has one door, but is fifty feet long–making it easy to store two cars end to end or a car and a boat–no need to pay the marina.
On the front of the house is a three-season sleeping porch. Begin your day with magnificent views of the sunrise as you sip a cup of coffee. Linda tells us that there are numerous opportunities to view wildlife. “Ducks and their little babies can be seen coasting in the lake. Once we even saw a moose in the lake. In the mornings we can hear the loons and watch the chipmunks scurry about. The hummingbirds will visit if a hummingbird feeder is placed outside and they are amazing to watch. Other birds will nest in the trees. There are wild blueberries that grow by the trees near the lake.”
And after the sun has set, Linda says that “in the evenings you can be hypnotized by the moon’s light reflected off of the lake. Even during a storm, the lake is a vision of beauty as you watch the whitecaps form on the lake.”
The house is nicely landscaped and though there are hard and softwood trees around, this isn’t a wooded setting. The 100-foot waterfront doesn’t have a beach, but steps lead to the sandy bottom of the lake.
And then there is the LAKE! Thompson Lake is rated one of the ten best lakes in Maine for water quality–substantially above average because it is spring-fed by the Poland Spring Aquifer. You can see right to the bottom–literally. “One summer my dad was swimming from the float to shore and, not being such a strong swimmer, started to laugh because he thought he could stand and couldn’t. Well, his dentures fell out and landed on the bottom of the lake. Being the lake is so clear; one of his daughters swam to the bottom of the lake and retrieved the dentures.”
The lake encompasses 4,225 acres and is almost twelve miles long. Twelve miles of spectacular, that is. The shoreline is varied with long stretches that are undeveloped, plus shallow sandy areas and steep, rocky sections. From your boat you can spend hours exploring the many coves and islands.
Thompson Lake is also a gem for anglers. The Maine Inland Fisheries monitors the lake and stocks landlocked salmon annually. You’ll also find lake trout, cusk, and large and smallmouth bass. Good fishing areas for bass include the northern end of the lake and the Heath. Winter fishing is also great.
For fun, Linda highly recommends that you “kayak or motor boat to The Outpost for a breakfast sandwich and paper. Or try one of their pizzas.” You can also grab an ice cream cone at Thompson Lake Marina. “You don’t have to get in your car,” says Linda. “That is lake life at its best.”
Linda’s father purchased the property in 1973. Two things they appreciated about it–location, location, location– “The area is a very quiet peaceful part of the lake,” she says. And yet, the neighbors are close enough for friendly conversations. Sadly, they’ve reached a point where the family has grown and everyone lives too far away to enjoy the home the way it should be.
That’s great news for you–let 20 Fairturn Acres in Oxford become a place for you to escape to and make your own lakefront memories.
