Haley Pond, Rangeley, Maine: Experience the Slower Pace at the Lakefront

Sunset on Haley Pond in the Rangeley Lakes Region of Maine

Rangeley in western Maine is dominated by lakes and ponds, including Haley Pond in the village center. Situated northeast of Route 4 and Rangeley Lake, the 165-acre Haley Pond is quiet and wooded, yet minutes from amenities. When you spend time at your lakefront property here, you’ll feel like you are a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of life.

The maximum depth of Haley Pond is 23 feet with a mean depth of 8 feet.  What fish will I catch? The principal fishery is yellow perch. Some fishing restrictions may apply so do check with the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. Is there a boat launch? Yes, you’ll find the launch along Route 4, but nothing above 6 horsepower is allowed. There are no known invasive aquatic plants and the water quality is below average.

Because the pond is small and no big motorboats are allowed, it’s a tranquil place to spend time, kayaking the 2.5 mile perimeter on a search for turtles, ducks, loons and heron or watching chipmunks and deer from the screened porch of your waterfront cabin, camp or cottage.
The Rangeley Lakes area is an outdoor lovers dream come true. Take it all in as you drive the scenic loop drive that will take you past mountains and lakes and possibly give you a glimpse of moose. Or experience the Northern Forest Canoe Trail–Haley Pond and Rangeley Lake are both part of the system that extends across from New York to Quebec and Maine.
You’ll find plenty of places to hike, bike, play golf or tennis, cross-country or downhill ski, snowmobile, snowshoe and skate. In fact, the town clears a rink on Haley Pond and free skates are available at Ecopelagicon, an outdoor gear and equipment shop located on the pond. In the Haley Pond Gazebo Park, located next door to the store, you’ll find a warming hut where you can purchase hot cocoa or coffee and roast marshmallows or hotdogs. That’s small town living at its best.
And for a one-of-a-kind photo call–stand at the 45th Parallel, the halfway point between the equator and the North Pole. A sign on Main Street marks the spot where Doc Grant’s restaurant used to stand and commemorates this imaginary line.
The pace is slower in Rangeley and life is uncomplicated.  Escape to your lakefront property on Haley Pond, and your biggest challenge will be deciding what bird is at the feeder just outside the window.
