Boyd Lake, Orneville Township, Maine: Lakefront Property in the Heart of the Great Maine Woods

Calm Waters on Beautiful Boyd Lake in Orneville Township, Maine

Boyd Lake in Orneville Township is located in the Central Maine Highlands Region of Piscataquis County. At 1,064 acres, the lake has a 12.7 mile perimeter waiting for you to explore from your lakefront cabin.

Boyd and Little Boyd Lake, connected by a narrows, are sparsely dotted with cozy rustic camps and cabins located along the shoreline or tucked into the woods. Orneville is an unorganized township, which consists mostly of forest land, with just a smattering of homes here and there.
The lake has a maximum depth of 20 feet, with a mean depth of 10 feet–offering a warmwater fishery for smallmouth bass, white perch and chain pickerel. White perch, especially, tend to school up in the evening during August. Where is the boat launch on Boyd Lake? Both lakes are accessible via a public boat landing by the narrows.
Boyd Lake was named for General J. P. Boyd, who originally purchased the township from the State. The town was called Boyd’s Plantation, but was incorporated as Milton in 1832. Town affairs, however, were mismanaged until Henry Orne of Boston, an heir of General Boyd’s, lent a hand to straighten things out. In 1842 the name was changed to honor its leading citizen.
Today, you’ll find Boyd Lake to be to your liking if you enjoy nature at its best and no close neighbors. Waterfront homes, camps and cottages along the shoreline provide a tranquil setting from which to enjoy all the seasonal watersports, including ice fishing. This is the perfect place to unplug and make lots of “camp” memories. Be sure to pack marshmallows, chocolate bars and graham crackers–there’s always room for s’more family fun!
In Orneville, Everett and Lee Worcester own Worcester’s Wild Blueberry Products, a purveyor of jams, jellies and syrups. Fifteen minutes away, Milo offers all the amenities to satisfy your needs. And Bangor is located 30 miles south of Orneville.
