Sibley Pond, Pittsfield & Canaan, Maine, Offers Lakefront Home Owners Plenty of Wildlife Viewings

Calm Waters Waiting to be Paddled on Sibley Pond in Central Maine

Sibley Pond in Pittsfield and Canaan, is set in the Belgrade Lakes Region of Maine. From your lakefront real estate on Sibley Pond, look to the sky and you’re sure to see osprey and bald eagles soaring above. As you paddle along the 4.8 perimeter, you might even encounter a great blue heron.

The pond encompasses 396 acres and has a maximum depth of 33 feet, with a mean depth of 12 feet. The water quality, tested by a volunteer from the Maine Volunteer Lake Monitoring Program, is somewhat below average.

The last time a plant patrol was conducted, no invasive aquatic species were discovered. To keep invasive plants out of the pond, please be sure to check your boat before you float.
The fisheries of Sibley Pond include largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, white perch and chain pickerel. Black crappie is also found here. In 1986 Wayne S. Morey, Sr. of Benton, Maine set the freshwater fish record with his catch of a 3 lb, 4 oz black crappie.
There is an “unofficial” boat launch located across the road from the former Along the Lake Resort on Route 2, west of Pittsfield. Be aware that it is narrow and rough.
The Route 2 bridge, which spans Sibley Pond and forms the town line between Pittsfield and Canaan, was originally built in 1939 and replaced 72 years later, in 2011. The pond is abutted on the east side by Canaan Bog, which you can paddle to by going under the bridge.
Pittsfield is home to the annual central Maine Egg Festival, a celebration of all things brown egg. The festival includes The Big Parade, a carnival, food, street dance, contests and live entertainment. About 3,150 residents live here and the town has all the amenities to meet your needs.
The charming village of Canaan has a population of just under 2000. Rolling hills and farmland dominate the landscape, including Nelson Hill.
While at your waterfront property, you might want to hit a golf ball at the JW Parks Golf Course, a nine-hole facility. And Sibley Pond is not far from Lakewood Theater, Skowhegan State Fairgrounds and the Senator Margaret Chase Smith Library. Eaton Mountain Ski Area in nearby Madison is great for downhill or cross-country skiing and snow tubing as well as hiking.
Sibley Pond is also only a day trip away from whitewater rafting adventures, Augusta, Bangor, Moosehead Lake, Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park, Baxter State Park and Mount Katahdin.
Swim. Fish. Hunt. Snowmobile. Cross-country Ski. You can do it all right out your front door when you own a classic Maine cabin, camp or cottage on Sibley Pond.
