Lake Minnehonk in Mount Vernon, Maine, possibly derives its name from the Abenaki place name for “berries stream.” After you purchase lakefront property on Minnehonk, you’ll have to determine if this is an appropriate moniker.

Minnehonk is a small lake encompassing 85 acres, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in depth. The minimum depth is 32 feet, with a maximum depth of 73 feet.
The water quality testing indicates an average rating for Minnehonk. The lake is home to nesting loons and great blue herons. And the principal fisheries are splake, brook trout, smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. You may launch a small boat from the town landing in the center of the village or fish from a variety of spots along Route 41, which borders much of the lake’s west shore.
Due to its small size, Minnehonk is relatively peaceful. It’s a great place to go kayaking or try a stand up paddleboard, since there are few motorboats.
Mount Vernon is located in the Belgrade Lakes Region. The quaint and quiet village includes a fire station, community center, post office, country store and several specialty shops. Located on the shore of Lake Minnehonk is the Olde Post Office Cafe, which we highly recommend.
Scenic hills above pristine lakes and open farm fields, as well as wooded areas offer abundant venues for getting away from it all. Besides Lake Minnehonk, Mount Vernon is graced with the shimmering waters of Torsey Pond, Parker Pond, Long Pond, Echo Lake and Flying Pond. Elizabeth Arden’s “Maine Chance,” a health spa on Long Pond, long ago put Mount Vernon on the map.
