Dyer Long Pond, Jefferson, Maine: Leisure Time at Lakefront Real Estate

Plenty of Coves to Explore at Dyer Long Pond in Jefferson, Maine

Dyer Long Pond’s wooded waterfront in Jefferson, Maine, is a haven for second-home owners. The slower rhythm of daily life leaves them plenty of leisure time in the great outdoors.

The pond covers 425 acres and has a maximum depth of 16 feet with a minimum depth of 12 feet. Water quality testing indicates an average reading. It’s long and narrow with lots of coves to explore and is surrounded by dense pine and oak trees.
Dyer Long Pond abounds with largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Sea-run alewives utilize the pond for spawning. A state-owned carry-in boat launch is located on the western shore.

One of the fringe benefits of owning a summer/winter vacation retreat here is the peace-and-quiet lifestyle. There is little power-boating–the pond is geared more toward canoeing and kayaking.
Nature lovers, including fishermen and women, canoeists, kayakers, snowmobilers and other outdoor lovers, are smitten with the pond. Osprey, bald eagles, turtles, loons and other birds are spotted daily.
Nearby is Haskell Hill, known locally as “The Mountain.” This is a favorite picnic spot for many. With an elevation of 495 feet, The Mountain provides an easy hike that offers views of an old beaver meadow and stream. This was also the site of a fire lookout tower.
Hidden Valley Nature Center is set on 1,000 acres along the western shore of nearby Little Dyer Pond. The center has twenty-five miles of trails and overnight facilities including cabins, yurts and campsites.
Dyer Long Pond is located in the center of Jefferson, just west of Damariscotta Lake. Originally the town was called “Brown’s Claim” when it was settled in 1770. Old farmhouses dot the rolling hills. Along Route 126 is the old cattle pound, a 40-foot circular stone enclosure built in 1829. It was used for stray farm animals. Today it’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
For those moments when you need a touch of reality and the amenities that go along with that, Dyer Long Pond is close to the Maine coast. It’s located only twenty minutes from Damariscotta and the Penobscot Bay and fifty minutes from Camden–an easy day trip from the cabin or camp on your lakefront property.
