The lake, shaped sort of like an ice cream cone–that tips a bit to the side–encompasses 1,388 acres and has a maximum depth of 87 feet, with a mean depth of 34 feet. This spring-fed lake is among the cleanest you’ll find and the water quality testing indicates it is above average.
As one of Maine’s cleanest lakes, the crystal clear waters will invite you to fish, swim and kayak. Landlocked salmon, lake trout, brook trout, rainbow smelt, white perch and smallmouth bass are the principal fisheries. The Arthur H. Farnum  Boat Launch is maintained by the state.
With abundant wildlife viewing, Swan Lake is a photographer’s paradise. Bald eagles, Canada geese, mallards and loons all nest here.
Swan Lake State Park is a 67-acre park for day use only. It’s located at the northern end of the lake, off of Route 141 and is open Memorial Day through Labor Day. A lifeguard is on duty for swimming supervision. Picnic sites and walking trails are available for public use.
Settled in 1774, Swanville is known as Goose Pond on some early maps. The lake is the headwater of Goose River.
The Swan Lake Grocery Store, at the southern end of the lake, is a favorite country store of locals and visitors alike. Here you’ll find everything from produce, meats and seafood, bakery and deli items, bottle redemption, lottery tickets, and an Agency liquor store to self storage buildings, propane exchange, gas, diesel and kerosene, an ATM and a rug doctor.
Located about six miles from Belfast, 30 minutes from Camden, 1.5 hours from Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor, and 1.5 hours from Freeport, Swan Lake is a great place to relax and enjoy the rural setting or head off for a day trip.
Golf, tennis, hikes, restaurants, theatres, antiques, ocean boat rides, train rides, festivals, state fairs, farmers’ markets, skiing, ice skating–it’s all doable from here.
