A gravel boat ramp is located near the public beach on Route 160. The principal fisheries include brown trout, brook trout, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass and chain pickerel.

 

Nearby on Routes 113 & 5 is Pequawket Pond, formerly known as Rattlesnake Pond. Pequawket covers 87 acres and has a maximum depth of 20 feet. There is no public access, therefore boaters must enter via permissive trespass. The principal fisheries are largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, white perch and chain pickerel.

Though Brownfield is near several shopping meccas, it feels like it’s a million miles away. Mountains, forest, the Saco River and Brownfield Bog are the dominant features in this town that has been rebuilt since the forest fires of 1947.

 

Water recreation includes swimming, fishing and canoeing or kayaking the small coves along the shorelines. Nearby are ski trails at Shawnee Peak and Mount Cranmore, plus hiking trails, including some new ones on Burnt Meadow Mountain and Stone Mountain. Speaking of the latter, the Stone Mountain Arts Center is located here–it’s a beautiful timber-framed music hall, owned by Carol Noonan, that hosts national acts.
