This shallow, sandy-bottomed pond encompasses 94 acres and has a maximum depth of 10 feet. The water quality is slightly below average. The pond provides good habitat for warm water fish including largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, white perch and chain pickerel.
Located just west of Mousam Lake, Loon Pond flows into Lower Mousam. There is no public boat access, though the town does own a small strip of land adjacent to the Boy Scout’s Camp Nutter. Even there, though, the access is quite limited.
Limited public access isn’t a bad thing. That’s what keeps Loon Pond quiet and peaceful.
The Loon Pond Betterment Association, led by President Pat Bickford, has three main purposes:
• To promote sociability of the camp owners on Loon Pond.
• To work for physical betterment in the immediate area for the benefit of the majority of the members.
• To provide information to landowners, which will benefit the safety and well-being of Loon Pond and its residents; not to offer policing or enforcement.
Many of the waterfront homes around Loon Pond are classic Maine camps, cabins or cottages. They’re charming, to say the least. And the lakefront real estate owners enjoy canoeing, kayaking, swimming, fishing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing on the pond.
Acton is a rural community, located in an unspoiled part of Maine. It’s situated next to Sanford and on the New Hampshire border. The beaches and shopping outlets along Route 1 in York County are close by. Only a day trip away, you’ll find the White Mountains or LL Bean and Freeport, Maine.
