Splendid Isolation Found on Barker Pond in Hiram and Sebago, Maine

Plain Old Relaxing Can Be Yours On Barker Pond
If you are like me, you like to get away from it all and there’s no better place for a piece of lakefront real estate, such as a cabin, cottage or camp, than on Barker Pond in the Sebago Lakes Region of Maine.
Created as a reservoir in 1900, Barker Pond is fed by Hancock Brook and covers 206 acres. The maximum depth of the pond is 44 feet and the water quality is average.
This very private pond is located one hour northwest of Portland and is a great spot for canoeing and fishing. Though there is no public boat launch, access can be gained via a carry-in site along the railroad bed at the northern end of the pond.
Grab your rod and reel because the extensive shallows, weed beds, stumps and rock piles make great habitat for smallmouth and largemouth bass. Brown trout and chain pickerel are other principle fisheries here. The pond is open for summer and winter fishing.
If you aren’t fishing, you might enjoy walking, running, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing or riding your ATV along the historic rail-bed of the Bridgton and Saco River Railroad, which operated here for 59 years. Over 130 years later, the rail-bed between Hiram and Saco is a popular route for folks to explore. Maintained by the Sebago Branch Duckers Snowmobile Club and Denmark Draggers Snowmobile Club, this is a beautiful stretch of ITS89.
Other outdoor activities in Hiram include a hike up Mt. Cutler, which passes an old gold mine. From the summit, you’ll be rewarded with impressive views of Mount Washington. Or you might enjoy the rocks and swift water at Great Falls on the Saco River.
In Sebago,a short hike up Douglas Mountain will offer you panoramic views from the Atlantic Ocean to the White Mountains from the stone tower.
Waterfront real estate on Barker Pond means living off the beaten path and just steps from the water. Here the land is wooded and lots roll and slope toward the water.
And quiet–you’ll find plenty of that here–only interrupted by the cry of the loon.
