Woodbury, Buker, Sand and Jimmy Ponds Make Up the Tacoma Lakes Region of Litchfield, Maine

The Tacoma Lakes Chain offers the perfect setting for Litchfield, Maine. Water flows from Jimmy Pond to Buker, Sand, Little Purgatory and finally into Woodbury Pond, which is regulated by a dam. A state-owned boat ramp at Woodbury Pond allows the public to explore and fish this chain of lakes.

Two other water bodies in Litchfield include the 746 acre Pleasant Pond, and the 5,238 acre Cobbossee Lake. Both have boat ramps. Cobbossee is known as one of the best bass fishing lakes in Maine. Tournaments are held throughout the season.

Litchfield is a small commercial village located at the northern end of Woodbury. Here you’ll find places like Black Crow Bakery, known for its traditional, stone baked breads and to-die-for sticky buns, Gowell’s Store and the Litchfield Country Store, which stock everything you need, and Batchelder’s Inn and Wee Otter Tavern, which is open to the public year round.

History is recorded at the old Town House Museum, an 1840s treasure that captures Litchfield’s heritage in agriculture, school, store and family, and the Odamogan Living History Museum, an interactive full-scale Abenaki Village set in the 1600s.

Besides fishing and history, folks enjoy swimming, waterskiing, bird watching, golfing, hiking and snowmobiling in Litchfield. The Meadows Golf Club is a par a68, 18-hole course in a wilderness setting that often provides a view of wildlife and water fowl. The Smithfield Plantation offers 103 acres of conserved land with trails for hiking, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Other local trails include Roger’s Trail, MacInne’s Trail and Turkey Trail.

Litchfield is a small town with plenty to do including the annual Fishing Derby in May, Memorial Day parade, Community Family Day, which is always the last Sunday in June, Fireworks on July 4th and the third weekend in August, Litchfield Fair on the weekend after Labor Day, plus plenty more. The Litchfield Sodalite, published monthly, is a wonderful source of news and events for the town.

Located only 20 minutes from Augusta and 40 minutes from Portland, Litchfield is a great place to own a waterfront retreat in a beautiful lakefront setting.
